Can anyone recommend me a good dictionary - from Urdu to English and Hindi? Are there any other special books that serve my purpose explained below.

My purpose: While listening to Old Hindi Film songs [of 1950s, 1960s etc. ... Legends & Sad-songs of so&so etc.] I come across Urdu words I don't know the exact meaning of.

Surprising while I know most of these songs by-heart (from childhood) ... only now, am I listening to & understanding some of the deeply-embedded meanings! (or not understanding in case of some Urdu words

A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi & English by Platts is a good one. There is an online version too! Although you'll need a unicode font generator for the Devanagari & Persian-arabic scripts. Don't know if it exactly what you are looking for but it is a start anyway:

Thanks PeakXV. The above does seem to be an interesting Site. In fact a Google Search [urdu english hindi dictionary] revealed many (thousands) more interesting sites. Some even specific to Movie Lyrics! Still evaluating all that.

Still, if anybody knows of a good printed (hard-copy) dictionary, would be interested in buying that .... KS

Urdu to English and Hindi Dictionary ?

Hi
I noticed your question about printed version of urdu dictionary. My mother was an urdu poetess and she has passed me on a couple of good dictionaries she used, hope this helps:

(if you know devanagri script)
Urdu-Hindi Shabdakosh by Mohammad Mustafa Khan 'Maddah'. (around 800 pages) I have requested online purchase at zabaan[dot]com since my copy is in tatters now.

Aaina-e-ghazal by Dr. Zarine Sani and Dr. Vinay Waikar
Urdu-Hindi-English
Not as extensive as the one above but it has most urdu words that
we hear in poetry. Also they have plenty of sher (couplets) as illustration of usage of a word.

I bought this about 10 years back for mother at Rhythm House, Mumbai so I guess it should be largely available in any leading book store.

Hope this helps....

You are replying to a four-year old post but this information could be useful to others. I recently bought an Advanced Urdu-Hindi-English Dictionary by S.B.Sahni and Md. Mazhar and have found it quite useful.
