A Vile Social Media Campaign Is Targeting Non-Hindu Carnatic Musicians

"Despite Christian Carnatic music being an established genre, self-proclaimed 'saviours' of Hinduism are attacking singers through a social media hate campaign in Tamil Nadu.

The people who claim to save ‘Hindu culture’ actually know very little about the tradition of Carnatic music.

...Read in the context of the atmosphere prevailing in the country, this whole Hindu-Muslim-Christian squabble from the Carnatic rasika community sounds pathetic, even silly. Especially because Carnatic music is seen as the bastion of privileged Hindus. Many have stood on the sidelines and said, “This has nothing to do with me.” However, this incident is proof that no space is immune to attacks."

the manufactured outrage of right wingers and Tamil Brahmins
And that would be how many Tamil Brahmins, Miss Ge? Did you count, or did you just take the comments of the kind of people that make poisonous comments on the internet as representative of the whole rasika subset of the the Tambram community? Looks like she did.

I'm not arguing that such prejudices do not exist: of course they do. I have taken part in Indian Classical Music groups/forums on the internet going back to USENET. Sure I have met with poisonous people: doesn't one meet one or two everywhere? But "If [they] decide to boycott your concerts then you will be having empty halls..." or, perhaps not. Perhaps their absence would not even be noticeable. And hey, Yesudas sings to packed halls.

Small storm in a small teacup. (probably soon to be fanned by a T M Krishna article!)

In other news... I don't know what Kanimozhi's religion is. Her extremely famous atheist father died today. It seems that his father was a nadaswaram player.

It's the "wire"

So what is really wire.in ? It's like FauxNews in the US; but for the Left in India.

In the social media, critics, rarely pay to go to these concerts.

Social Media Campaign Targets Non-Hindu Carnatic Musicians

At least here at the hub of the carnatic music world, all of us "rarely pay" to attend concerts! They are mostly free, due to sponsorship and, yes, low payments to artists.

Anyway, I am probably the only IMer (including our Tambram members) who gives more than a passing toss about this scene/music, so the topic will probably end here. On this forum, at least: I'm sure it won't be the last I hear of it elsewhere in the net

I give more than a passing toss — sometimes I think it keeps me alive , I know jack shit about the internal politics, but who cares if it sounds good go for it

Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, as is the case with most social injustices, the dominant group will dismiss accusations or excuse the behavior and claim to be just.
There have been recent investigative studies revealing that most media outlets in India have a bias and have accepted payment to promote far right agendas.
All that aside. I don't think Indiamike should be a platform for arguing politics. Politics tend to spoil everything.

In the last Aust census I listed my religion as “Ducatist” as in someone who worships Ducati motorcycles — I am hoping the next minority group targeted will not be Ducatist Canatic aficionados if so this will effect thousands of devotees

I'm not advocating political ignorance, but rather a respite from an increasingly politically charged world.

Social Media Campaign Targets Non-Hindu Carnatic Musicians

There's another article by Ms Ge, this time attacking one of the rabid attackers.

There's also a Facebook post by Nithyasree, stating that she never sang Trinity songs with Christian names substituted for Hindu. She says she wishes only for communal harmony and apologises to anyone who feels hurt.

Some balance from Ms Ge, I suppose, but referring to Nithyasree as "Mahadavan" suggests a lack of understanding of the naming conventions and I wonder if she actually has much of a clue.

Perhaps she just got the brief: so many words on this topic. In which case, marks for effort.

As expected, T M Krishna has joined the debate, if such it can be called.

A wonderful musician, he's tedious when he takes to the pen. None the less, antichristian that I am, I support his stand on this issue. Or should I say non-issue? Ms. Ge seems to have found the one man at the centre of these attacks.
