On television in India one gets movies with English subtitles. I am curious to know if Indian movies are available in Europe/N America etc. with English subtitles ?

Had run into a traveller who wanted the European rights for Hindi movies with European language subtitles. Enterprising.

What is the status now ?

In the cinemas most of the Hindi movies have screenings that will show English subtitles, I've never watched one though.

I guess if you bought dvd then there would be ability to turn subtitles on / off when watching.

I've never seen an Indian movie being shown on TV though in UK.

Not everyone subscribes to cable ; especially one with Indian TV ! But yes, many Europeans I know would love to watch an Indian movie with subtitles... I dont think the Indian film industry has quite caught on.

We have English subtitles on the movie channels offered through our cable company. I get the South Asian package when my mother-in-law is visiting and that includes movies, Indian TV shows/serials/news channels. There are also a couple of movie theaters in our area that have sub-titles.

English subtitles are also offered on DVDs and movies online through Netflix, etc. I'm sure they're on YouTube, etc. (for free) as well.

Just have to look out for them! Every year, Channel 4 has a season of about 10 Indian movies, predominatly but not only of the "art" variety. This year the season had Hindi as well as Marathi movies, one I remember from a couple months back was Fandry, which was excellent. They are all subtitled and typically have a short interview with the director beforehand, made by Nasreen Munni Kabir, who I see is speaking at the Jaipur Festival.

They are usually shown on Sundays and some other week-night at some ungodly hour (1am or so) so best if recorded.

Ah, here is the link: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/indian-film-season

I watched my first ever foreign movie this week, it was Italian though, not Indian. I really liked it and will probably try and watch more movies like this. I always thought subtitles would annoy me but it wast that bad. Hopefully will watch my first Bollywood movie this week.

I do digress but then isnt it time that we had globalization in India - European movies with Hindi subtitles ! Released in India the same time as in Europe ?

No idea! One that I can understand the storyline in case there are no subtitles. But I want to see lots of crazy singing and dancing.

Vishva has chosen the following DVDs. You may all vote the best for me to see...

Sholay, Kal ho naa ho, Kuch Kuch hota hai, Dilwale dulhania le Jayenge, munna bhai mbbs

And which one of amitabh bachchan... naseeb, deewaar, amar akbhar Anthony, namak halaal.

If any have lack of dancing and singing then I will be happy with whichever movie has the hottest Bollywood actor...

If you get the chance watch Baby. It released in India today. I have not seen it, however the director Neeraj Pandey is very good. I enjoyed both his earlier movies "A Wednesday" and "Special Chabbis"

Below is a scene from the movie A Wednesday.

Could not get a subtitled version.
