I am a HUGE live music fan! I am hoping that while in India I might get the chance to experience the live music scene, if there is one there. I am staying with a friend for part of the trip in Kolkata where he is a musician so I think he will be able to get me get a live music fix, but I was curious about other places? Is it easy to find live music in India? What is the culture around this like. Also even though I like any one else have music preferences I am open to any and all live music.

Thoughts?!!??!

THANKS!

I'm also interested in this question. This autumn will be my first india trip and I would love to see some classical Indian (or another) music performed live.

Mauraemily,

What exactly do you mean by live music? Concerts? What kind of music? If you are in Kolkata during winter, there's an endless stream of concerts. But the ones I am familiar with are in the Bengali language.

I'm really hoping to get to Kolkata on my next trip, is seeing Baul music an option??
I'm sure I'll have a spare hour or two in between gorging on "bong" food

I haven't really seen Baul being performed in Kolkata. The best place to see Bauls perform is in Shantiniketan, during Poush Mela (roughly from around Christmas to the end of the year). That said, there are a couple of "professional Bauls" who live in Kolkata, and if you are in luck, you might just find a Baul concert in Kolkata. Personally, I prefer the non-professional Bauls of Bolpur/Shantiniketan.

Hm, Baul music you'd just have to get lucky I guess. When will you be there? They have a major festival a few hours from Kolkata, late Jan./early Feb. or thereabouts. (Could be early Jan., I'd have to check my notes.)

For nightlife, the "Burrp" sites are not a bad start, see http://kolkata.burrp.com/. It's not very obvious, but where you see the city name listed at top left on their site, you can click on to other cities they cover.

There's the TimeOut magazine, http://www.timeoutmumbai.net/, in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. I've found the sites not very good, the magazine is excellent. Readily available with newspaper sellers on the ground.

In other cities, ask around what are good local papers with listings. It's often a read it in the morning, go in the evening kind of thing. Probably more classical than say pop and the likes in this field.

Decent bookstores can be a source of information on cultural events. Possibly tourist offices if they're any good, of course; though in fact I rarely bother with them in India. That doesn't mean they can't be good.

A tip ... in Kolkata, if you pick up a copy of "The Telegraph" daily in the morning, they usually have a list of concerts/performances for the day.

"The Telegraph"- thanks for the tip.

I am really looking for information outside Kolkata since there I am with someone who grew up there to help me out, but still good looks on the telegraph info.

But I am also going to be in the gaya reigon and surrounding towns. Darjeeling and up into Sikkim, Nepal, Varanassi, Delhi, Rishikesh / Hardiwar, Dharamasala, Amritsar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai... Maybe Goa.Any one ever find live music here. And when I say live I mean Indian music, not Indian... just people playing instruments. OPEN TO ALL KINDS!

You can also check out the Telgraph online before you go to get an idea of what sort of stuff is on. Select 'Calcutta' on the list on the left, and then 'What's On' over on the right of the page. Here is today's page.

I also gave some info about the concert venues, as well as theatres and art galleries etc in this thread:
http://www.indiamike.com/india/kolka...where-t102546/

Sorry I can't help on the other places - I think Kolkata really is the best city in India for this sort of thing. I wish I was going again - I'm jealous of you!

In Delhi visit the Nizzamudin Dargah on Thursday evenings for sufi music. In Rishikesh there used to be a little blind ensemble that would play along the Ghats at Swargashram.

In Palolem (Goa) there are several live jam sessions in the tourist season. Just ask around. If you're lucky you'll hear Susie doing a rendition of her great Song "I Dont Want To Die In Big knickers" a song about women growing old ;-)

Hey, Klompen, I was just looking up something about the Bauls regarding another thread. Wikipedia currently suggests that: "For the last five years a unique show has been organised in Kolkata, called "Baul Fakir Utsav". Bauls from several districts of Bengal as well as Bangladesh come to perform. The 6th Baul fakir Utsav will be held on 8th and 9 January 2011. The Utsav is a continuous 48 hour musical experience."

Could be something of a lead, no. Do a further web search on that "Baul Fakir Utsav," it doesn't seem to be without substance (and as noted before, I think this general period is -- one of? -- their major festival times, anyway). Some groups regularly tour Europe btw, you might find them in say Amsterdam's Tropentheater or the Melkweg or something. Or similar venues or festivals across the country, no doubt.
