The explosive film lifting the lid on sex trafficking between India and LA

"Love Sonia is the shocking tale of a young woman caught up in the global sex trade. Its director and stars, including Demi Moore and Freida Pinto, on the true stories that inspired it.

...India has its own specific set of problems around abuse, and its own difficulties facing up to them. The horrific case of Jyoti Singh, who was raped, beaten and killed by six men on a Delhi bus in 2012 prompted nationwide public protests and worldwide condemnation. “I get asked more about rape in India than progress in India,” says Pinto, who has also been a prominent advocate of women’s rights off-screen. Abuses also go on inside India’s film industry “100%”, Pinto asserts. The country is ripe for its own #MeToo moment, she says. “I’m sure there are many women out there who are so scared to speak and they will only speak if they feel that solidarity. I wait for that day.”"

I had the privilege of meeting the National Geographic photographer, Jodi Cobb, whose NatGeo story on slavery and sex trafficking was its most viewed story. She told of her time in India photographing the brothels, but not only in India but all over the world. She said nothing in her life up to that point and prepared her for what she was to see.
