An Indologist I met in India, and teacher at the university at hand, kindly pointed me to this Hindi intensive course (summer school) each summer at the University of Hamburg, Germany, Department of Indian and Tibetan Studies (Asien-Afrika-Institut).

At a three-tier level aimed at both complete novices as well as more or thoroughly advanced students, the course takes 90 hours over 3 weeks. Completing the final level will earn you a certificate and, if I understand right, can be recognized as part of your ongoing studies.

Costs are 350 Euros for non-students; if I get it right, it's E 220 for students elsewhere (including high school students), whereas Hamburg University students pay only a nominal fee for teaching materials. The university can provide lodging in a student house for a fee (274 Euro for a full month).

For those to whom this schedule is a little too much, there is an evening course as well at the same rates, two nights a week, naturally spread out over a longer period (namely three and a half months).

A firm grasp of German would presumably be required of you (and part of the teaching material appears to be in German), however there is a note that due to a growing interest among foreign students, classes may be held in English if deemed fit.

Classes this year start in August, deadline for applicants June 30th (April for the evening course, deadline is next week).
