Hi All,

As a part of my job I have recently been given responsibility over a development team in Bangalore.
My normal (ie in the UK) approach to a new team would be to break the ice by dishing out treats - doughnuts sweets cake etc, possibly a pint in the local if that suits.
If I wanted to do the same in Bangalore, can anyone recommend some dos and doníts - Is there anything I could bring over from brit (legally) that would go down well in an office environment. I would not want to commit any unknown faux pas, and obviously, I want my new team to see any offerings as they are intended

Thanks

ScouseChris

PS - New to this forum, but It is really good and informative - Thanks
PPS Appols if this is covered elsewhere, I have looked, but to no avail.

Welcome to India

Hi Chris,

Welcome to India.

I think, there are no major cultural faux paus associated with Gifts in India.

I am putting myself in position of your team member and would answer this.

Doughnuts / Cake from Home - Could be difficult.
Sweets / Chocs - Perfectly acceptable and would set the right tone.

To give a brief view on the Indian office culture- Whenever I go to my native place and back, would pick up the specialties sweet eatables from my native and distribute it the first day I am back. So your choice of sweet / English perfectly resonates with acceptable ideas. Only concern is please choose something vegetarian and not containing meat.

Regarding the Take out for the team - Suggest have a non-alcoholic lunch or dinner since you would be better equipped to handle the team in a alcoholic atmosphere once you get to know them better.

trust it helps.

Thanks for the advice Ajay,

I have got some Chocolate batons from Hotel Chocolat (Very Nice) it would be nice to see them enjoying these.

On the take out front, I have asked the team to suggest somewhere and I will pay - so should meet with their expectations.

Fly out Sunday I am apprehensively excited (that's good I think).

Chris
