Hi folks, new to the site. Id appreciate any input please.
I've applied to a specialist position with GE Healthcare in Bangalore. However, the pay cut is extensive. In the US I'm currently making 70k USD/year. The salary stated to me was 900k INR/year. This is a huge salary cut. However, I'm more interested in the international experience and culture. Id like to maybe make 1.2 million INR/year. Is this reasonable to live with? I'm unaware of any benefits including healthcare or accommodation. So lets say they aren't offering any of that for the moment. For a single guy is this salary okay?

I would only like a modest place and a membership to a local gym. I am also a personal trainer, so I love to exercise.

I will not have a car, kids, or anything but the clothes I'm taking with me.

I do eat a lot of food, do they have great produce markets etc?

Do they have furnished places around? What is an average cost?

How much does a small scooter go for?

Any other info you can provide please let me know

Michael,

Do find out what your take home pay will be and report back. Depending on how creative your employer is it could vary a lot. While your salary appears healthy by indian standards, it will not go far if you try and maintain your US standard of living. For example. membership to Gold's Gym here costs Rs 21K/year. But a local gym would cost a lot less. Yes, they have great farmers markets here, but it will be difficult to communicate. Self help supermarkets are plenty, but quality of produce will depend on your luck on any given day. Furnished places are available and can be a lot more expensive (20-50%) than unfurnished places. You can get a second had scooter/motorcycle for about Rs20K. But, do search and read up other threads on costs of living, riding a motorcycle in India etc.
