I dont know where you would stay (to suggest nearby eateries). You can try out

Kamat restaurants.
MTR opp to Lalbagh
Maiyas Jayanagar 5th Block/Malleswaram 13th cross opp to venugopalaswamy temple.
New Krishna Bhavan opp to Mantri Mall Sampige road
Halli Mane Near Malleswaram circle.
If you are looking on the economy side and home food you can try
Iyer Mess (Tamilnadu style home food) Malleswaram 8th cross, Near Kanika parameswari temple. (40rs per meal served in plantain leaf).

All the above restaurants have unique taste and you can try whichever is closer. other IMer's will suggest the best hotels in their areas.

They are all over Bangalore.

Try :

Nandhini - Andhra style - Opp. Karnataka Bank, 4th Block, Jayanagar. I think there is one in Koramangala as well.

Anjappar - Chettinad style - 4th Block, 100ft Road, Koramangala.

Mavalli Tiffin Rooms(MTR) - Lalbagh road

There are several others i can think of but the above ones fit your requirements.

One of the best veggie Thalis can be found at Hotel Woodlands near Richmond Flyover. Costs upwards of 100 Rs, and is fantastic. One of the best examples of Udupi style cooking. Available only during Lunch hours.

Great..I'm not sure which area I would be in, but it's somewhat closer to MTR. Is MTR better for breakfasts or for lunch/thalis?

People rush to MTR for both. Kamats have many branches and chances are there that you will find one near where you are staying. Look out for the sign 'Meals Ready"

I prefer the tiffin to the meals at MTR. I consider the meals to be overrated these days. It still is good, but I love the Woodlands Thali over the MTR Meals. For Tiffin/breakfast however, have it at MTR if you are in that vicinity. Wash it down with good strong South Indian style Filter Coffee.

I wish I had the time to tr out all the places, I went to MTR,Vidyarthi Bhavan and a Kamat outlet and another local Udupi outlet.
MTR was no doubt perfect, adding a very different perspective to the "rice, sambhar, papad, rasam" image of a south indian thali. The badam halwa,Bisi Bele Bath, chutney-dosa were something different. More of a rich south indian thali. Totally worth it. Locals might complain about the food not being that good ,but I would recommend it for any non South Indian.
Vidyarthi Bhavan also changed the "how different can a dosa be" concept of a few of my friends. The Kesari Bath was also outstanding.
Ragi Dosa was a good try at the Kamat outlet.
I think just about any "south indian looking" place in Bangalore would be good.

Late reply, but thought would be useful for others in future!

Apart from all the other mentioned above, I would love to visit the 'Sukh Sagar', closer to Upparpet police station, Majestic for a sumptuous 'south Indian thali'! I think the serve unlimited thali too!

But, I feel, all the darshinis too have very good 'thali' being served for lunch/dinner.

Hey man, it is not possible to tell you anything without knowing the exact location where you stay. By this, there are so many south Indian cheap restaurants that are providing good quality food at very affordable cost. First you may tell me your location in Bangalore then I will give you the ideas in details.
Thank you !
