Dear friends,

First of all, thanks for all the info on this forum. It has been quite useful. After reading through all the IM posts about Kaziranga, I too am eager to visit Kaziranga soon. I'm trying to figure out if it is too late to try to visit this year in December. Meaning I am wondering whether it might be too crowded as in hard to get elephant safari on desired route. I am currently thinking either early Dec 2014 or Feb 2014 or wait till Dec 2015. Would greatly appreciate advice/feedback from you.

Currently, I'm planning a 7 day trip. My current idea is:
Day 2: JetKonnect flight Kolkata to Jorhat leaving 11:50am , arriving 14:00 Rs3574
Day 2+: Jorhat to accommodation Kohora / Kaziranga by car. (2 hour drive, 90km) (~Rs1200? Need to get contact number for potential taxi/hire)
Night 2: Checkin to hotel. It will be 5pm. Assuming it will be too late in the evening for the elephant safari so evening activity will be dinner, pack and prepare, stargazing and rest since the next day start time will be about 5am.
Day 3 early: Leave hotel by 5am and be at Western range Bagori for elephant safari. 5:30am - 6:30am. Western route is Bagori along the Central path towards Donga - rightbank of Mori Diffalu river and back to Bagori. Budget for elephant safari
Day 3 morning: 5km hike at Panbari. We've got from about 7am to about noon.
Day 3 noon: lunch. walkabout central area, checkout market.
Day 3 afternoon: 3pm - 4pm Elephant safari same western route. Just the elephant fee
Day 3 evening: Gohpur about 8km away. Gohpur Reserve Forest. Dhandi Devalaya temple. Bor Pukhuri / Sivasagar water tank.
Night 3 : Dinner. Some hotels organize Assamese cultural exhibition. Maybe try that , otherwise sleep or stargazing.
Day 4 early: elephant safari eastern range. route. Agaratoli Dhuba Road then to Sohola Water body and back to Agoratoli at the Southern periphery of the Park.
Day 4 morning: Kakochang waterfalls. Need to figure out trail or guide.
Day 4 afternoon: elephant safari eastern route
Night 4 : Deoparbat ruins. Looks like it is about 40km away on google maps. Deoparvat Archaeological Site #39. Need to figure out transport or guide.
Day 5 early: elephant safari central range. Mihimukh Kathpora Daflang -Diffalu river bank Monabeel -Kerasing and back with designated stop at Kathpora Tower, Daflang Tower and Kerasing Tower.
Day 5 morning : 10km hike Kukurkata trail
Day 5 afternoon : 3pm -4pm elephant safari same central range
Night 5 : figure out whether Kalyani Mandir/Dipora is on the northern bank and whether this can be tied in with a boat trip / gangetic dolphin spotting.
Day 6 early: elephant safari northern range. Ghorakati Potahibeel Diffalu - Tunikati and back with designated stop atTunikati Tower.
Day 6 morning : Basudev Doul, (water tank)
Day 6 afternoon: elephant safari northern range
Night 6 : decide between Deotola (about 45km away) or Akadohia Pukhuri or Bapuchang or more boat trip
Day 7 early: checkout and taxi back to Jorhat
Day 7 morning: Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. Leave by 12noon for flight.
Day 7 afternoon: flight from Jorhat to Kolkata Rs4000 2h10m flight at 2:30pm to 4:40pm.
Day 7 evening : arrive back in Kolkata , checkin hotel in Kolkata
Day 7 evening late : Kolkata stuff TBD
Day 8 morning, afternoon, evening: Kolkata stuff TBD

Thanks,
jayakumar

We visited Kaziranga and Jorhat in March 2010.

Here are answers to some of your questions:
-Elephant safari are in the morning, you can only make reservations on the previous evening
-We paid 1500 rs for the Jorhat Kaziranga trip
-The hotel in Kaziranga had a guide who helped us with the traveling there
-Day 7, driving to Jorhat and visit the gibbon sanctuary in the morning is not possible

More details of our trip you can read in the March part of my journal: Seven weeks North-East

Hi Vonkla,

Thanks for your reply. The info is useful.

For the Jorhat and gibbon sanctuary, do you mean I have not allocated sufficient time for travel in the morning? I was thinking that if we leave Kaziranga by 4am, then with 2 hours travel, by 7am should be ready to hike in the gibbon sanctuary.

Am reading through your posts now.

Thank you,
jayakumar

Thanks for your reply. I'm still reading through your journal. I read about the little girl. This part "it becomes clear that she is ashamed that the cobbler let us pay too much" is very touching. It is nice to see people be honest even when though we have so much poverty and lack of access to education.
