We (me and my wife) will be in Silchar in the last week of March. As things are unfolding at the moment, it seems that there will be three full days which we can plan for ourselves.

Initially I thought of Shillong, but the journey time seems to be too long to fit in. Haflong, too, is under consideration. But I don't have any idea how safe that place would be to travel to.

It's a shame that I don't have much information on particularly this part of my country. So we would really appreciate any advice, suggestion and information on how we can plan for those three days.

My only suggestion, at the expense of inviting ridicule for being an armchair traveller is based on Michael Palin's Himalaya. He describes taking the Barak valley express up the Cachar hills from Silchar or thereabouts. The train passes through numerous tunnels. You may explore that if it works for you.

You can check out Jatinga, it will be around 100km north of Silchar and is famous for bird suicides.

Sorry, Vaibhav and karikor, for being so late to acknowledge your help. Many thanks for them.

In fact, I had (or rather have) a plan of visiting Haflong during those three days and was considering using Barak Valley Express for the onward journey from Silchar. I have heard of Jatinga and so called the "birds committing suicide" phenomenon.

There is no doubt over the natural beauty of the place and the visual treats one is blessed with during the train journey. But the real problem is lack of information. I will be travelling with my wife and do not know how safe those regions (and the train journey, too) are currently. So would really appreciate any information related to the current situation of the railroad and the hill station.
