We are going to Assam in February for one week. We just have a couple of weeks to plan. Please tell me how to plan an easy trip. We are keen on getting a feel of the state and not necessarily wildlife.

1. Does it make sense to fly to Jorhat and start our trip from there?
2. Can we visit Kaziranga as a one-day trip from Jorhat? Is it possible to book jeep tours after going there?
3. Or should we start in Guwahati, go to Jorhat by morning train to see some of the landscape and then go to Kaziranga and fly out of Jorhat?
4. What other city would you recommend for us to get an authentic Assam experience in terms of food, lifestyle, local absorption, important places of interest? Should we to to Jorhat or some other city instead?
Kindly help. Thank you.

During our 2010 trip we stayed in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur and Kaziranga.
Out of Jorhat we did a daytrip to the interesting surroundings of Sibsagar.
Jorhat Kaziranga is 2 hours by car, so I guess a day visit is possible. Another option is to stay a night in Kaziranga and continue the next day with tour trip.

Details of our trip you can read in the March part of the 2010 journal in my signature.

Thanks for your reply. I saw your write up.

Can you or anyone else tell me what the difference between Kaziranga western gate and other gates is? Also, is an elephant safari necessary to get the experience of Kaziranga or will a jeep safari be enough?

To answer some of the questions, you don't need prior booking for jeep booking for safari, you can do it easily yourself or ask your hotel to do it for you.
If you start early from guwahati, you can reach kaziranga in 4 hours, before afternoon safari, stay the night do the morning safari and return to guwahati.
Another park close to guwahati is pobitora, where also you can see rhinos and if lucky river dolphins. Close to jorhat is hoolock gibbon sanctuary, India's largest primate, worth a visit. In lower assam close to Barpeta is Manas national park.
For kaziranga, I loved the Western range more, but the Eastern range or agarzari range where tiger sightings happen more frequently. Check my blog on it.
Assamese is the lingua franca of the region, except of the Barack Valley, where shyleti (bengali) is more prevalent. It is a mixing pot of multiple communities, where each have their own distinct language and culture.
You can cover sivasagar, hajo, sualkuchi, tezpur etc
You may want to go to lower assam Manas Park, enjoy the tea gardens and village life of Bodo people.

An elephant safari brings you closer to the rhino's than a jeep but is not a must.

Another day around Jorhat you can spend on the Majuli island.
