Hello,

So i have travelled a lot across India but never really written about it in forums. I am in Assam right now - taking a sabbatical from a job that i have already left [My last date being end of April in my resignation letter] I am here to understand the life in Assam. Basically i might end up taking care of a nature resort in Guwahati. So its a big decision that i need to make before end of April.

I believe in a work/life balance which isnt possible in Bombay. Its been two days and Guwahati has been good to me. People are friendly, well spoken. Apart from a bad incident where a store guy selling simcard spoke rudely to me and i was taken aback - i have only met good people.

The way I want to figure out my decision is by doing things in Guwahati - Not essentially sight seeing but getting more involved in the daily life. I am able to do this already as i am staying with locals.

The other thing i want to do is go out travel [my most favorite part of figuring out this decision]. Here are some places that i have shortlisted after reading many many threads on Indiamike.

Meghalaya, Shillong, mawlynnong, Cherrapunji , tezpur, Haflong, bomdilla, tawang, ziro valey

I dont have a route plan or a date plan yet neither do i know if i want to visit them all or may be few of them. I dont like traveling to a place for a day or two so i end up staying in one place for as long as it takes for me to blend in with the nature.

I want to know if i can travel solo to all these places and if its safe? I hope it is because thats my plan. ANy other suggestions, must visit places will be highly appreciated. My return ticket to bombay is not booked yet so its flexible.

Thanks a ton to everyone who has already helped me in shortlisting these places.

Also, thank you to you as well for reading this and for helping me make up my curious mind.

With Metta,
Komal

Hi sissypeancreed

As far as my knowledge goes you should be okey solo travelling to the places mentioned. Except Haflong. I’m not sure whether the North Cachar Hills are in peace these days. Till 2011 it was one of the most disturbed places of Assam and being from East India, quite familiar with Assamese language, I faced terrible aggravation and petrifying incidents out there. So know well before you venture to Haflong.

By the way, I’m curious about a place in Assam, where somehow my several attempt to venture failed. The place is Mayank, somewhere near Nagaon.

The place is notoriously infamous for Tantra and evil spiritual practice. I had heard several creepy and weird stories about the place. If you could get specific details of the place, please update us on IM.

I would also welcome pro IM ers to shed light on this place and share experience, if any..

So I checked about "Mayong" here. Its just 30mins away from the Resort where I will be employed and my boss here promised me he will take me since its closeby. According to him, yes it was known for its blackmagic. There are stories where apparently a journalist went there to figure this out, was offered lunch. He, just like me, loved chilly so he asked for one. The host said yeah sure and said some words and the chillies came walking towards the journalist. What happened to him after that, nobody knows.

ALso, there are these low chairs where you sit if you visit someone. And if your host likes you for his daughter/son, then you are stuck to the chair forever.

But these are just stories. My boss here said that he has been there and met good people. He says may be once upon a time people did blackmagic but they dont do it now.

So if i end up going there [my plans in guwahati depends a lot on my boss] I will go there and tell you more about it.

Hi,
Hope you are having a good time in Assam.
Yes you can do a solo journey to all the places you mentioned and are very safe to visit except for Haflong.

You can simply plan an itinerary like this->Ghy->Shillong->Sohra->Shillong->Mawlynnong->Shillong->Tezpur->Dirang/Bomdilla->Tawang->Dirang/Bomdilla->Itanagar->Ziro->Itanagar->Ghy

You can also add a few places from Nagaland like Kohima,Mon,etc. But that's upto you to decide.
