Hey everyone,

Does anyone know of the name of that famous and historical Bharatanatyam dance institute? I believe it's supposed to be in Kerala, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Are you referring to Kalakshetra? If so, it's in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In a locality called Thiruvanmiyur.

the dance form originates in tamilnadu, so it is likely that there may be historical schools in that state.
Link to the same school mentioned in previous post : http://www.kalakshetra.net/

I don't know historical, but i know some famous schools, or dancers.

Pick a dancer, chances are that they have their own school. Some will be better known than others, but, except among the students themselves, it is unlikely that the name of school will be better known than the name of the dancer*. I have no clue what the top handful of top bharatnatyam dancers call their schools --- but the one name that we all know, even if (like me) we are not particularly into dance, is Kalakshetra.

So that's now three votes that say the place you are thinking of is probably Kalakshetra!

Kerala has a huge number of classical and folk art forms of its own, quiet disproportionate to the size of the state. Possibly the most famous school is Kalamandalam, but a quick look at their site shows only the Kerala dances, eg Kathakali and Mohiniyaattam and more.

*Adam's suggested Nrityagram (sounds like a service where classical dancers burst in on your birthday party ) might be one such, although I think its real fame is in Odissi
