When you say wholesale, what quantity is that? The Kantha (type of stitch) on these scarves is nice enough to warrant a higher retail price.

It appears all these Designer Kantha Scarves are made for Vishal handicrafts of Jaipur and were hand stitched in far off villages in Rajasthan. Wondering what is Bengali about them?

@ Rwehavigfun, Gorgeous! Yes, not sure why they are called Bangali - perhaps this kind of craft originated in that area?
@ Sama, its best to select your scarves when you are in Jaipur to ensure quality - you could email and ask for a sample or two to be posted to you.

Dr Rudi, this appears to be a different one - not the same address i visited in Jaipur. Probably lots of Vishal's trading scarves -wonder if its a common name?

Just a funny aside: i struggled to remember Vishal's name what with the heat and the madness of Jaipur....plus i am just downright bad remembering names so i came up with an association - german accent "we shall invade Poland". I would giggle inside everytime i would meet with him.

RWeHavingFunYet its bengali because the word "kantha" is a bengali word which refers to old cloths stitched in a particular pattern to be used as rugs or wraps mainly for new born babies. this particular pattern of stitching is used in bengal to depict many mythological stories, social events or daily life on cloth and is named as "Nakshi Kantha". This form of art has no relation with Jaipur

Interesting, thanks. The English word is quilt.

Origin of QUILT: Middle English quilte mattress, quilt, from Anglo-French coilte, from Latin culcita mattress. First Known Use: 14th century

Vishal = We shall -- is funny.

Remember, your name may not be in Wikipedia, but → Vishal ← is.

Kantha is kantha - no english word for it. But to make someone understand - one could use the word 'quilt'.

Quilts are patchwork and usually has a layer of some kind of 'stuffing'.
Kantha is made of layers of entire sarees - and it is the running stitch which is it's trademark.

However, over the years - kantha embroidery has come into vogue.
