Hi,

I'll be on a bit of a flurry through the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh soon - probably a few days around Vijaywada and a few days around Vizag. I'm interested in suggestions on what the highlights of this region are for visiting. I'm most interested in historical sights (as well as submarine museums!), particularly the colonial history of the region. But I'd appreciate whatever you think is worth a visit with a week or so in the region!

And finally, one specific question: what's Machilipatnam like? Is there much there to visit, or at least a vaguely colonial atmosphere? How far is it from Vijaywada? Best approached as a day-trip or overnight stop?

Many thanks!

The best I can suggest is to get out of the large cities and find places to stay in small towns/rural areas. Rural is the way to go in that region. There aren't any historical sites there, but mostly agricultural/canal system built by Cotton etc.

Machlipatnam is now like any mid size town now.

To add Araku valley and Borra caves, Simhachalam temple near Vizag, Beaches in Vizag, Satyanarayan swamy temple in Annavaram, Kanakadurga temple in Vijayawada, suryalanka/vodarevu/chirala/bapatla beaches.

Yanam too is a good choice.

Yes, have NO doubt about this.

It's not a dry heat. It's the kind of heat that will not let you sweat nor cool down nor breath - if you are not used to it. Like a pressure cooker. If you are not used to that kind of weather, it's really hell on earth.

That said, It's my favorite part of Andhra Pradesh and the hospitality of folks in this region is is unbelievable.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep them coming. Heat is not something that bothers me, I'll travel whatever the weather is! I'm intrigued about the suggestions to visit Yanam - I've visited the other 4 ex-French colonies in India, so it would be kind of fun to complete the set as it were. What's there to see in Yanam? Easy to find a hotel? Reasonable transport connections from Vijaywada and Vizag? (in fact, what's the bus service like in general in this part of AP?)

Many thanks!

Foreign smuggled liquors and goods!

On a serious note, it is an interesting little town with french/british colonial history/monuments. Have a quick look at Yanam

Yes, shouldn't be any issues.

Public transport is good between Vizag/Vijayawada and Yanam.
