Hi,
I am planning to drive myself from Bangalore to SriSailam. Need advice from the people familiar of this route. I googled and found that most of the drive is on NH-7 which i believe should be relatively well maintained as it connects Bangalore to Hyderabad.
Questions that I have:
- Is driving from Bangalore to Srisailam can be done in one day? If not then which are the suggested places for night halt?
- Any places worth stopping over in between Bangalore - Srisailam?
- What should be the best time for the visit? I am planning for July or Aug.
- Any precautions while entering the reserve area?
- Do I have to take some permit or ticket to enter the reserve?
- Recommendations on hotels in the area.

Looking forward eagerly to hear back from the experts.

Thanks,
Amit.

1. Can be done. Take breaks if you alone are driving or have a backup driver. Anantapur or Kurnool can be stops.
2. Puttaparthy is one which can be done along, though you need to go off the highway.
3. July/Aug is rainy. If you can drive safe in the rain, why not. The Dam there will be full, the forest will be green.
4. None, I think the reserve has some time limitation in that you are not allowed at night. I am not so sure as it was quite a while back that we drove from Hyderabad.
5. No permits.
6. There are not many hotels, but quite a few Mutts/dharamshalas there. You should be able to get a place.

You could include Ahobilam if you are visiting Nandyal/Mahanandi.

Back at this again - hopefully this time definitely going to make to Srisailam. My Plan is:
- Oct 24: Start early morning from Bangalore to Kurnool via Leepakshi. (400kms expected travel time around 8 hrs). Visit Alampur in the evening. Night halt at Kurnool.
- Oct 25: From Kurnool to Srisailam. (178Kms, approx 4.5hrs drive). Temple visit and some local sight seeing. Need inputs on what can be done.
- Oct 26: Visit to Ista Kameshwari temple / Akka Mahadevi caves.
- Oct 27: Srisailam to Mahanandi to Belum Caves. Night halt at Puttaparthi. (Total distance 403kms, approx 9 hrs travel time)
- Oct 28: Return Bangalore.

Suggestions needed on:
- Is itinerary ok in terms of the actual travel time? Suggestions of altering welcomed.
- Is this area Naxals infected? Any route to avoid?
- Road conditions specially on the non-NH roads.
- Which places to stop for food?
- Any precautions/suggestions about travel time, fuel stops or food joints.

Thanks,
Amit.

I am back from the wonderful trip and some tit bits on the route:
- NH7 (Bangalore - Hyderabad) is a dream. I have never seen such a highway - other cars were overtaking me when I was at 160KMPH (can't believe it still).
- The forest area between Kurnool and Srisailam is not really good. At some places the road didn't existed but then the drive was very scenic crossing through the dense Jungle i.e. Atmakur to Doranala.
- Doranala to Srisailam is a nice drive with a few pot holes (some are really big in fact).

I stayed at APTDC hotels in Kurnool and Srisailam, though found food of Maurya Inn better in Kurnool. The location of both the hotels is pretty nice with Srisailam one very close to the temple. The main temple is as good as it can get - and amazed me with its architecture specifically. There was a culmination of so many cultures and rulers influence that it was not easy to really pick one unique style of construction. The outer wall was just a glorious canvas of the old tradition Vijayanagara style - simply spell bounding. Language for me though become a slight problem sometimes (as I am hindi speaking) but overall manageable.
