Port Blair airport is NOT an international airport. There are ONLY domestic flights to port blair available from Chennai and Kolkatta. Only From Chennai / Kolkatta International flights are available.

Thank goodness, Port Blair is still unravaged by international flights. But there was talk a couple of years ago of charter flights starting up from Bangkok...

According to Andaman tourism website, Foreign tourist charter flights are also permitted to land at Port Blair subject to the fulfillment of guidelines of the Director General of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India.

Till date there is no immediate plan by any airlines to operate international flights.
By the way anybody can charter a flight to any civilian airport in the world with prior approval of the respective airport authority.

Hi,

7 years have gone by, looks like there's still no connection to Bangkok, although the airport has all the standards.

Any clue when this could eventually happen?

It's not going to happen.

A tourist will have to use the facility available at mainland only.

Sorry, not interested in any type of argument.

Foreign charter flights are permitted to land at Port Blair Airport subject to the fulfillment of guidelines of the Director General of Civil Aviation.

Being vulnerable for the security point of view and smaller runway, the government may not grant permission for international flights...

Interesting... I always thought there would be a rush of tourists coming from Bangkok the day they open a connection. Besides, they've been talking about opening a route more than 10 years ago, but still nothing.

That's why it won't open.

This is the 1964 Indian Airlines route map. In those days flights from Calcutta to Port Blair made a "technical stop" at Rangoon. No one was allowed to board or alight there but passengers were led into the terminal building and served a meal while the aircraft refuelled.

Here's a Vickers Viscount in Indian Airlines livery. This is the kind of plane that would have flown to Port Blair in 1964. http://www.indiamike.com/india/chai-...3/#post1656005

The MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) is of the opinion that every tourist is a potential busybody and in any case a p. in the a. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are an undevolved Union Territory and thus a private bailiwick of the MHA.

Just look at this: http://www.and.nic.in/gov/gov.php. The Lieutenant Governor looks like some kind of Caudillo (this one is an armadillo too).
