You really don't need to set this up in advance. There's a pre-paid taxi booth at the train station and the fare to the Taj should be less than $5. You'll have to negotiate fare for the return trip to the station, just insist on the same fare you paid to go to the Taj. There's no reason to hire a cab for the day unless you plan to visit other sites in Agra. In that case, bypass the pre-paid booth and you will find dozens (if not hundreds) of taxis outside the station. Negotiate hard and I doubt that you'll have to pay more than $25 for the day. If you're just heading to the Red Fort after the Taj, I would travel "ala carte" and hire taxis for the short journeys rather than for an entire day.

As you've noticed, Agra Fort is the preferred station for both the Fort and the Taj. When booking, just make sure that your train stops at Agra Fort; I'm not sure that they all do.

I couldn't find express trains that went from Delhi to Agra Fort station using Cleartrip website (for the dates I wanted at least) they seemed to only go to Agra Cantt station which I have booked.

From Delhi most trains stop at Agra Contt. Book a train to it. About the same travel times to the Taj, maybe a few minutes longer.

I tried to find this train, on cleartrip it comes up only if you put a date about a month in advance, and then it shows only ac 3 tier and sleeper as options, however when you try to book it, site says 'could not get current availability' probably a glitch that will right itself.
Details I found
Name
U A Toofan Exp
Number
13008
Starts
Shri Ganganagar
Ends
Howrah Junction
Days
M,T,W,Th,F,Sa,Su

However I have booked the Bhopal Shtbdi 1 hour 57mins from Delhi to Agra Cantt AC1 includes brekky. I plan to just hire a ride at the other end to see the Taj then back on the evening train to Delhi.

I would suggest to visit official website of India Railway to check the schedule/availability of a train/berth, whenever it is required to be checked. You need to click the desired request on left hand side panel of the page! It is quite helpful.

If you check the individual train's schedule, you would find which train stops at Agra Fort!

BTW I didn't find any express train stopping at Agra Fort! If I remember correctly, there are very few trains which stops there. Though passenger trains stop there. So I would have preferred to commute between Agra Cantt and Fort by road!

The Toofan Express does. It is a very old and famous train. It has even been the title of a film. It gives you a very good view of the Taj. I always took it on my way from Patna to Delhi and back in my childhood. For a short period in the 1960s it was routed via Agra City and the North Yamuna Bridge. I just checked Agra City. There is an express train from Bombay to Bareilly that stops at Agra City.

Mahakali,

How much is it to hire a driver and a guide for the day?
I'm doing something similar to what you're doing - getting in the morning and returning to Delhi the same evening.
I'd prefer to get a guide/driver up front so I don't have to deal with the touts and lines at the Taj. Also, since I'm only in Agra for 6 hours, do you think it's possible to do both the Taj and Agra Fort?

Thanks in advance for your input.

You can do both in this time.

For taxi better to prebook. A good option is Travel Bureau. You may contact them at travelbureau@vsnl.com.
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.
