Famously there was once a quote on the forum to say that the best place in Agra is the railway platform that you leave from.**

You probably have time to visit Fatehpur Sikri but you would need to hire a car as it is about an hour's ride each way.

ADD ** - My memory is defective. It actually said that after the Taj Mahal the one thing not to miss is the train out.

Go to Mehtab Bagh in the evening and before going there visit Itmad-ud-daula. You can also visit Sikandara.

If you want you can also consider visiting Deeg Palace.

There are many smaller but in some ways more satisfying monuments in Agra. It takes a bit of adventuring to hunt them down. The tourist authority should have the Agra map of such..

Here is a problem with that. What is close to the Taj (Hotel Sheela) may not be close to the Fort. For special needs I always suggest a phone call to the hotel..

FWIW, here are my thoughts on visiting Agra....

I've been twice, once in early January, and once in late November.

January was VERY cold (like 5 degrees Celcius) and extremely foggy. I stayed at Sheela which was OK, but Taj Ganj is really touristy and you still have to run around in the morning to the ticket office, then back past Sheela to the Taj. (use the bike rickshaws hanging around the entrance to Sheela). There is not really anywhere good to eat in Taj Ganj and the touts are unbearable.

In November, I had bad luck and had some light fog. This time I stayed near the Tourist Hotel, some distance away from the Taj...but some very good restaurants in this area, it's quiet and fairly interesting to walk around. A good bookstore here also. I made the mistake of going to the Taj on Sunday, the lineups are unbelievable and the Taj grounds are like a human ant hill, try to go Monday through Thursday! :)

The real key to having a nice time in Agra is to GET YOUR OWN RICKSHAW DRIVER and keep him for the two days. Two years ago it cost me 400 rupees per day to have him on "retainer"...I had his mobile number in my phone and I would just call him to come and get me, or he would wait for me at some places. The "baby Taj" is good to see, and also, it is interesting to go to the park across the river from the Taj for some good views and pictures. I had great drivers both times and I didn't have to worry about the stress of getting around at all. Agra in not the rotten place it's made out to be at all, have fun!
It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!

your there on a weekend so it be well worth going for sunrise at the Taj on the Sunday morning when there are far fewer people.

You'd probably have to check in and leave for Fatephur Sikri straight away, it takes around 45 mins to one hour to get there. I cant remember what time it closes but if you take the tour of the palace its 2 hours, audio guide is probably quicker. When I was there in Feb the Taj opened around 06.45am for sunrise viewings. Better to see at sunrise because less people, also if you want nice photos of the reflection in the morning get there early before the cleaners decide to go prodding around in the water and making ripples. It gets busy around 9 / 10am. You could easily see the Taj and the fort before getting your train at 2PM.

With just about 24 hours the OP will have to be very selective, perhaps just the usual checkoff sites. Good to use #9s advice on an auto..

You can also buy your ticket for the Taj the day before to save time on a morning, I did.

I stayed in hotel Sheela too, its nice and quiet, no noisy tuk tuks allowed down that street. Its only 5 min walk to Taj so good location, they have 2 cute dogs too, Tyson and a little crazy pomeranian devilish thing that went crazy barking at the monkeys. The WiFi never worked!
