I will be visiting Agra at the end of January 2017 for 2 nights and will arrive there by Gatimaan Express at Agra Cantonment Station at 9.50 in the morning.Hopefully, I will be able to move out of the hotel (near South Gate) by 12.30 at noon. Hence, I will have one and half day to see the places of interest there. After two nights I will be heading towards Bharatpur in the 3rd morning by car (have to reach Bharatpur within 2.30 p.m.) and have a plan to visit Sikandra and Fatepur Sikri on the way, instead of visiting those places separately. Now I seek the guidance from IMikers how and in which order I shall plan my visit to those places.within and out side Agra.
Thanks and Regards to you all.

Reviving this thread .

My question is similar to the OP's. I am taking the Bhopal Shatabdi and hope to arrive in Agra before 9am. All the advice I see says to go first to the Taj Mahal and then the rest, maybe as a way to beat the crowds? On the other hand, I also hear than January has a lot of fog, which disperses in the afternoon, so my gut feeling is better to go there in afternoon?

I remember Agra Fort from many years back, so will skip it. I plan to see only Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj, and fit them in before catching the Gatimaan Express at 17:50. I hope that is do-able. Any insights?

Extra credit to anyone who has good advice on how to get a taxi driver who will *not* insist on going to any of the marble shops. I really would prefer to avoid this.

To avoid fog interference I would have done Fatehpur Sikri first and then to Taj Mahal.

But please note, fog gives a mystic effect to the scenario...

You may ask UP Tourism counter/office at Agra Cantt railway station (Contact No: +91-562-2421204) to arrange a cab.

Place to visit in Agra and in which order

When you visit Fateh pur sikri, make sure you visit the old monument. Most of the guide/ driver will only take you to the tomb of Salim Chisti, as there are lots of vendors who get free entrance and will harass you non stop. The car will drop you in the car park and you will need to walk or take an auto rickshaw to the main entrance, which is right next to the ticket office.
Visit Sikri in the morning and visit Taj in the afternoon.

Be aware of the chaddhar scam that happens there. The guides usually take you to a guy who sells the chaddhar you spread on Chisti's tomb. They will tell you that the money is used for running the madrasa inside the mosque complex. They tend to over charge and after being used in the tomb the chhadar makes it back to the seller.

Also as GP mentioned the guides would not take you to the palace complex. To get to the palace complex you would need to exit from the Shahi Darwaza from the mosque complex. I was not able to go there when I visited the complex with my family.

Also see if it would be possible to visit Mehtab Bagh across the river to see Taj Mahal. Also if you make it there also go to Itimad ud Daula the first marble structure in Agra which is said to have inspired the shape of the Taj Mahal. It is also known as Baby Taj.

If you need a car and driver check with Travel Bureau. They have been recommended earlier by Delhiwala and me here.

Thanks all for the warnings. Usually I don't mind wasting a bit of time until I figure out I am being taken for a potential scam, but on that one day time will be tight so it is good to know what to look out for.

Q: are Ola/Uber drivers less likely to take to those shopping spots where regular drivers look for commission? Or are they also greedy for commissions?

Fatehpur first it is then, followed by Taj. Mehtab Bagh and Itimad ud Daulah are across the river - would I be risking missing the train if I tried to fit those in the day?

?
Those services calculate payable amount based on GPS routing. Significant variation from the route may result in suspension of the driver from the company's network.

So I'd likely not think of them as being 'involved' in the commission scam.

That said, Agra sucks.

Oh yes you would be.

The city's congested , filthy and outside the main monuments protected by ASI - relatively much better kept than elsewhere - not a nice experience. Forget walking anywhere.

Sikri to Agra road is bad, even now. They built two one way roads (2x2) with a very wide median. However, this being the great state of you pee, instead of the traffic using each road as a one way , traffic flows both ways on both roads. There're no road lights either (I've done that stretch three times lately - twice at night).

Sikri requires three hours, Taj two hours, Ait-ma-d'aullah one to two hours. Moving between Sikri and Agra is one hour each way, so total two. Taj and AMD are next to each other so no problem there. Totaling these up, eight breathless hours without a lunch stop (impossible given how oppressive the air is).

If you're not sold on Sikri, though it's a pity to miss it, the easiest circuit is to do Taj, AMD and finally fort and leave the city.

Thank you both for the links - I will call closer to the time. It might be best to arrange for a cab for the whole day, to get me back to station on time.

I am sold on Sikri - I think you all have sold it quite well. That's why I plan to do just Sikri and Taj. And I guess in that order. Gatimaan seems to be quite punctual, and I don't want to miss the return journey.

Enjoy! Glad you have more time than I have there, even though Vaibhav says Agra sucks.

Those that visit for a day or so are likely to agree. If you stay longer you fall into its mood and start to appreciate it. Its not easy to see that in a rising industrial city. There are perhaps 35 sites other than the obvious. I have been trying for ages to get the tourist department's map for such. There is a quiet Taj look alike that I appreciated more for the ability to think. Its a moody dark city with even a film about the electricity theft..
