As i could not find a forum for Mathura I thought I might post here. A friend and I have a free day while in Delhi. Is it worthwhile going to Madura for the day. And what is the best way to get around to see all the temples.

Train or bus to Mathura?

Cheers

Take Bhopal Shatabdi Train. It Leaves Delhi at 6 Am and reaches Mathura at 7:20 AM.

Starts back from Mathura at 9:10 PM.
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Mathura/Vrindavan are nice places to see but depends on your interests. If you are not interested in religion/spirituality then it's not a place to go.It can take 1 day for each easily.

I have been to Mathura many years ago in our group on the way back from Taj and we were in a hired bus.We saw Lord Krishn birth place and few temples etc. Also last week our bike group went to Vrindavan and it was good as well.Just wrote a detailed tlog on it at another site.We saw Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir temples and wanted to see ISCKON but didn't have enough time. The temples usually gets closed from 12-4 PM.In Prem Mandir the best time is when the Shayan Arti is going on(around 11:45 AM) since there are lot of light and sound effects.

Hiring a taxi in your case would be the best and easiest way as you can go anywhere and stop anytime.

Just one quick advice from experience: check the timing of festivals. During festivals, it can be very difficult to get around Mathura, though of course a lot more entertaining.

Its a pilgrim town and there are many impressive temples spread across Mathura and Vrindavan. One that impressed me very much was http://en.brajdiscovery.org/index.php?title=Govind_Deo

However, If someone felt varanasi was a 'dump' then the same description could go for Vrindavan....

Though I absolutely adore Varanasi, I was very much disappointed with both Vrindavan and Mathura.I visited in january this year, and found the temples (Except banke vihariji) extremely artificial and superficial (Prem mandir, raman reti, vaishno temple and pardonme for saying this, even Krishna janmasthan)
Also, there is some tussle between Vrindavan and Mathura, and each tries to demean the other city's attraction in a very obnoxious manner. They mislead and misguide you on purpose. Not to mention that both cities are extremely dirty and chaotic. The yamuna river is in a deplorable state as well.
