I'm trying to figure out sunrises, sunsets & day (or days) for Taj Mahal, and have a variety of questions:
  1. It sounds like sunset is the priority in January?
  2. But then what does that sunset timing mean for crowds?
  3. Would Sunday be less busy than Saturday?
  4. Between train stations & Taj Mahal what's a good area of town to grab lunch?
  5. Restaurant recommendations for a place overlooking the Taj Mahal? This is the rare occasion where a high end option would be terrific.

I'm leaning towards:
Saturday: check into hotel near Keoladeo. If we're energetic go to Fatehpur Sikri but definitely going to Keoladeo through 5:43 sunset.

Sunday: Shorter visit to Keoladeo to experience the 7:08 sunrise. Back to hotel for nap & lunch. ~90 minutes travel to Agra, arrive at Taj Mahal by 2:30 so that we know we're situated for admission at least two hours before 5:43 sunset. Astronomical twilight lasts until 7:03, so hopefully dinner overlooking Taj nearby, then budgeting 90 minutes for return to Keoladeo.

Monday: If anyone is eager to see Taj Mahal sunrise or to return to Keoladeo sunrise we'll do that. Otherwise hire a drive to go from Keoladeo hotel to Fatehpur Sikri & wait for us (so luggage is situated) then take the train into Agra Cant, leave luggage, and go to Agra Fort until 5:50 train.

More background for the patient: Traveling with my husband, 11 year old son & 13 year old daughter. If we can time Taj Mahal on the weekend, in addition to gaining crowds I think we could also gain more time to visit with family who live in Delhi especially photos that would last a lifetime.Because we'll be visiting family in Patna the day before we start our Rajasthan tour, we're flying into Jaipur & so ending at Agra rather than starting there. I want to think about how Taj Mahal hits the kids when they've already seen a lot and are getting that end of the trip tiredness. (This is part of why we're staying at Keoladeo instead of Agra - it seems like it will be less hectic since we have enough time to budget for dealing with travel issues.)

Thank you!

In the month of January there would be heavy fog in that part of the country. So you will have to wait for the fog to clear to have a clear view of the Taj.

Sunset timing would mean when you hear a whistle from the guards I guess.

For dinner you could consider Taj Khema. I think one can see the Taj Mahal from their lawn. Don't recollect if the restaurant is on the lawn. If not then check for mention of roof top restaurants near the South Gate in this forum. Use the search box at the top.

Weekends are usually busy.

When in Bharatpur do see the Government museum inside the fort. Also if time permits visit Deeg Palace. More information in my trip report in the signature.

Have you sorted out your stay in Bharatpur?

Thank you - reading the trip report now - very helpful!

Will the guards blow their whistles before sunset? If so that would be good for me to set my own expectations!

Working on the Bharatpur reservation. Birder's Inn came back saying we would need two rooms, each INR 3750, which works although I'm trying to find family rooms at least some nights of the trip. Planning to send an email as well to Falcon Guest House, and the new Lonely Planet is scheduled for release this month so also sort of waiting to see that come out.

You could set your expectation as 5:45 as you mentioned.

I was about to recommend Falcon. Also most hotels / guest houses will take care of your transport requirement also.

There is sheroes cafe in Agra. It's run by acid attack survivors. Food is Ok but concept is superb.
