I have about 3 days between leaving Orchha and needing to be in Delhi. We are doing Agra (Taj Mahal) at a later date when our friends meet up with us. So, we have three days to kill, and don't want to go to Agra. It looks like Fatehpur Sikri or Gwalior make the most sense to visit in between Orchha and Delhi. Does anyone have advice on which of these is more worthwhile, or any other places we should visit that are along the way?

Thank you!

Not sure about Gwalior, but Fatehpur sikri is only 40 km away from Agra (1 hr journey by car), and 2-3 hrs to spend there and again back to Agra. So it is a half day tour (4-5 hrs). It can be covered when you visit Agra. For the in between 3 spare days you can see Gwalior and also consider Khajuraho which is approximately 170 km from Orchha.

In Gwalior the must see places are the Fort (Manmandir Palace, Teli Ka Mandir, Saas Bahu Mandir and the Gurudwara), Jai Vilas Museum and the tombs of Tansen and Ghaus Mohammed (in the same compound). According to me Gwalior is okay for a day.

In Fatehpur Sikri, nothing apart from the fort which can be done in 2-3 hours. If you want you can check out Bharatpur (bird sanctuary - not enough birds after February), Fort Museum and the near by Deeg Palace.

I had been there recently in September 2011. I think you can easily do both.

Take a car from Orchha and visit Datia and possibly Sonagiri en-route. Sonagiri didn't impress me half as much as Datia but by the time we got there - travelling from Gwalior to Orchha - we were all hungry, so maybe that's why.
We found Datia unexpectedly wonderful and wish we had more time there.
Spend the afternoon and next morning in Gwalior and then head off to Agra and you'll have some more time to explore Agra, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri.
If you like birds then as Aarosh says Keoladeo is worth a visit. We went there at the end of March (2009) and there was way enough to spend almost 8 hours there - and we're not ornithologists.

Here's some of my blog articles which may help:

Gwalior, If you're not covering it later. It can be rushed through in a day or you could take two to leisurely explore the fort, scindia palace, gujari mahal, tansen tomb, etc.

Yes Datia, it's a wonderful place, very out of the way with few tourists. I also like Gwalior for the short time I was there.

But if you've got the time can't you see both?

Sonagiri is nearby too but it wasn't my cup of tea.
