Years (actually decades) ago we got off the Taj Express and got a car for the day, which took us to the Taj, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's tomb, and some overdecorated mausoleum across the river with (if I recall correctly) a view of the Taj. Long day but quite doable.

Is this still possible, or is traffic now so bad that the sun would set (we're planning to go in winter)?

In the winter it would be a tough task. Trains could be delayed by fog during December - Mid February period.

If you are in Agra the night before it would be better.

The overdecorated mausoleum is called Itimad-ud-daulah also called baby Taj and is said to be the inspiration for Taj Mahal. I don't think the Taj Mahal is visible from there. Taj Mahal is visible from Mehtab Bagh.

Traffic is very bad indeed - did two day trips in November. Three sites in a day for a leisurely pace. Also, it's Taj that is set in the least accessible part of the city and hence takes some effort getting to and out of.
