Detail of the old Portuguese Diu Fort. Part of it is still in use as a prison, lending to the general atmosphere and the sense of appreciation you get there for the lives of the soldiers and people -- mostly poor bastards themselves -- who must have once inhabited it. Imagine trudging around there in a steel harness, perhaps slightly minimalized, trying to avoid scurvy and malaria and what have you and understanding the natives with not a Lonely Planet or an internet cafe in sight and not thinking too much of tapas bars and fado gigs back home. I'm not talking about the big VOC types here of course, just yr average Juan Doe having signed up to leave for the Indies one drunken night perhaps -- or simply having been forced there or drugged and waking up on a ship some foul morning.
