Heading back from Madikeri to Mumbai, and finally home...; the Konkan Railway line, Mangalore-Mumbai.
A famously scenic train ride along what is known as the Konkan Coast, I couldn't get me a daytime ride for the life of me within say a week's notice; it being mid-April (of 2009), the Indian summer holidays were firmly kicking in, and besides it's presumably just an important line, connecting the much deeper south to the much further north even. Book early.
As it was, I was lucky to with some ado get me a mostly nighttime ride at all, then. We passed Goa only well by night, so this must have been closer to Mangalore. The stretch between Goa and Mumbai is actually said to be the most scenic of it, with much jungley hills and plenty a waterfall and whatnot; apart from this, the line is also something of a feat of engineering, plunging through many a lengthy tunnel straight through the Western Ghats, the lower mountain range that straddles pretty much all of the south-west coast.
