For you slide instrument fans, there is a slide version of the veena --- the chitra veena. Unlike the Saraswati (normal) vina it also has sympathetic strings. Check out any recording by N. Ravikiran.
In Sama's picture here, you can see that the frets are set in a hard wax. Time and climate take their toll on this wax, and the frets need to be re-set from time to time. Obviously, the placement is critical.
If this is the shop I think it is, there is a mridangam maker's shop nearby too!
