It can be dangerous working with most any animal, and far more so with large ones!
I have spent a lot of time around the elephants in Jaipur where they only use female elephants for safety reasons. Even at the Elephant Festival they use females and hook wooden tusk to them making them look like bull elephants.
These elephants are in the public eye around tourist and their treatment has improved greatly over the past few years that I have been around them.

Any idea how many people are killed by our pet dogs?

it's the conditions at these festivals - apart from huge numbers of people everywhere, the elephants are made to stand for hours in the sun waiting for proceedings to begin, on tarmac roads (they are meant to tread earth), music blaring from loud-speakers, etc.
