My favourite state in India (and I've only visited, err... 4
) is, undoubtedly, Kerala. Whether it would be the perfect place to live though, is another matter entirely.trooooon, the TN climate suits me, for 9/12ths of the year at least, but very many people would disagree. As for the sense of well-being in Tamil Nadu, it is diminishing fast . I am never sure whether things like that are a change in fact, or a change in perception, but I am sure, for instance, that there is more violent crime and robbery now than four or five years ago. My spectacles might have been rosier then --- but I read the same papers as I do now! |

Let me start by excluding....it cannot be tamilnadu - for several reasons - not all of which can be stated here. But reasons include the horrible auto drivers and bus conductors...

Many many years back on my first ever solo trek - this was to Pindari Glacier in the Kumaon part of Uttarakhand, I had a small pleasant experience...
On my way towards Pindari, after a night's stop-over at one of the villages, Khati, I think; when it was time to pay the caretaker of the KMVN Guest House, I realised I only had a 500 Rupee note and didnt have any loose change... Without wasting a moment of my time, the nice man simply said - Just carry on... Pay up on your way down in a couple of days time...! I was converted at that precise moment of time...! Yes, the Himalayas are all there in Uttarakhand, the views are absolutely lovely, the climate is great; there's flora and fauna to talk about; but most importantly, its the people who really matter... And the people in the hill state of Uttarakhand, are relatively speaking, honest and more relaxed in their approach to life... Cheers...! |

Coorg in Karnataka
Uttarakhand (I love Uttaranchal, but, well......) Himachal Sikkim in that order for me. Criteria....People, crime rate, climate. In that order.Standard of living being similar. All being hills. Except in the rains when you may like to take a vacation away from coorg because your clothes never dry and leeches suck your blood.

The reason is you get people from all the states settled in Bangalore mainly for work (i.e. IT) and also people just love the weather here. |

Coorg between January and March is absolutely heaven...
The coffee aroma of the Robusta and Arabica harvest intoxicates you to an almost Nirvana level... Cheers...! |

There's got to be something wrong with every where!! So I guess its a personal choice!!
Nick, I can completely understand where you're coming from, when I last went to madras, a year ago, it was so different from the place I knew as a kid, though coming from Delhi I must admit it felt a good deal safer and more chilled! and if you've got 2 1/2 months to kill it sounds like a perfect traveling window ![]() As I would always have my own transport, autos would not really effect my decision . . . the food however does big time, and madras food rocks in my opinion! Its also such a great place to be based . . . so many interesting places close by ![]()

A clear winner, Maharashtra aside from Mumbai. The people make the difference. I might be just a tad biassed but I am trained to be social science objective so..
