Why do you assume her lawyer did nothing? Her lawyer might well have been making objections that were being overruled or ignored by the judge, who is primarily at fault for allowing the proceedings to go on as they did. The woman's lawyer has no control over whether or not the proceedings go on. That's the judge's call.
