I don't think we are talking secret spies here! Just a division which covers, among other things, immigration.
If genuine, these guys are police: if they want to come to the house, there is no choice. However, as a means of sounding out whether they are just a couple of guys looking for info on expats, it could be neat. Of course, if they are, they already have it, so that's that!

Could be...but I can't confirm it on Snopes!! Anyways, they haven't showed up at my house since that day, so they must've lost interest or felt I wasn't a threat.

Of course, it could be down to simple Indian standards of "efficiency". Do ensure that your documents are safely kept and handed down from generation to generation... They will probably get round to visiting you in the year 3014
