Jalandhar to Amritsar takes between 1 to 1.5 hrs depending on the traffic...the road is being widened and under renovation forever! and if you do go to Jalandhar, food at the Haveli resort near the byepass is very highly recommended..

Oh yes ! Food at Haveli Restaurant is highly recommended.

And yes ! The night time ceremony when Guru Granth Sahib (The Holy Book) is carried back to the Akal Takht in a procession, is a very unique event to witness.

I spent some weeks in Jalandhar last year and even though I'm a Punjabi, and therefore obviously love the place :-) I wouldn't say it's really much of a tourist destination. So unless you have a specific reason for being there, not really much to see. On the other hand, as others have mentioned, the Golden Temple is an extraordinary place to visit. Jallianwala baag is a short walk away from the Temple and you could probably spend about an hour there.

I go only to Jaldhar for visit a friend - then I pop over to Amritsar. As I couldn't found much about, I opend this thread. But sure I will do it. It's not absolutely necessary to go on tourits paths in India - the best memories and special moments I always had in Real India!

You are right when you stated that not everything is about sight seeing. When I make my journey to India one day..I am hoping to relax a bit, not just run from one tourist site to another. I have a feeling that some of the simplest things in life can be very enjoyable. I started thinking this way when I was in Iraq. The place was so foreign to many of us, and many ridiculed the quality of life. I opened my eyes and noticed that some of these people who did not have much and lived with out much technology and luxuries were rich in other ways. They got to enjoy a simple life instead of chasing a dream only to wake up and realize that in the pursuit of these luxuries life has passed you up. I think the Punjab state might be a nice slow paced experience. Getting to meet new people and just relaxing.
