Well done, it did seem that way to me but worth checking eh!

Applying by registered mail - Well i fancy that as it would save a lot of hassle getting down there and so on. Do you know how they acknowledge receipt of the application, for example does the online tracking apply only to Citizenship (OCI) applications?

Hi Paleface,

Your name doesn't have to be in her passport for you to apply for PIO. Or didn't she have a passport at all before?

I have sent my papers, through an agent, to Delhi. My brother in law works for this agency and I found this easier than flying to Delhi myself. But still facing problems... they are giving the 1 year marriage rule again. When told that there is no such law, they said they could work around this for money. Which was ok with us. It started with 10K "service charge", then they increased it to 15 and since last week they are quoting 30k!!!

We have 2 options now: wait a few more months when the 1 year is over and apply again (and who knows what they will come up with then!) or pay it so that at least I can work again. We decided to go for the latter, hoping that they will not up the price even more...

It is so frustrating!

30 grand for a frigging assist, they are having you on my old mate and i suggest you ask for clarification of exactly what this is for, and suggest you will pay 10 and not an anna more, i mean just hang tough a bit - that is exhausting i know, guess it depends on your capacity to afford this...

It helps if my name is officially in her passport, i.e. it's undeniable then - No she had a passport but got it renewed for this purpose. I suppose they call it covering the base in the US, we've been married 3 yrs so the 1 year thing is no obstacle this side.

Actually earlier today i found the list of officers at Jaisalmer House in Delhi on the net, rang the Joint Secretary and by chance he answered - i wanted to know where i lodge my application, being from Uttaranchal, he confirmed Jaisalmer House. Sounded a good guy, at tleast he gave me an answer ad some time, bodes well in my interpretation, as i could now go meet him with a kilo of local Rajma dal!! Also could drop his name if need be... Ashim Khurana ji told me that this would not be a problema and if there was a problem i should get it referred to him and why don't we.... Getting ahead of myself perhaps, anyhow time is seldom wasted in reconnaissance eh!

You are absolutely right that I'm getting scr*wed. The problem is that I would like to work as a teacher and the school that I applied re-opens in 2 weeks and will only take me if I hv my papers sorted out. Schools don't usually hire during the schoolyear so I will hv to wait for another year to get back to work otherwise. So I just see it as an investment... It is much more costly if I cannot work for another year...

Of course and i fully appreciate that, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The negotiations are a favourable sign, on the basis of some money is better than none. The corrupt are predictable so you can safely put your foot down and say 12K, last offer... knowing that they will counter offer, that's if you have a bit of time left to play. Offer on Monday morning and i'm sure you'll get a response quite quickly. If you do pay the 30, set your own conditions as well, i.e. i want this work done immediately, 50% in advance, rest on completion??

A retired senior man from MHA in Chennai told my wife (she had worked with a relative of his) that they really do not like dealing with agents. Our attempts to get stuff done through an agent turned into a farce; luckily we had never given the man any money, and had got all our valuable documents back from him. He still tried chasing us for cash though! Bloody cheek!

The one-year thing does not have to law; they can, more or less, do what they want. The law may be set down, but policy they can change.

My wife, being the intuitive one, said, Indians can only come down, they don't climb up once a price has been set??? She's convinced yr bro in law is party to the demand - Ooops, sorry about that one, but i mean how sure can you be...

Ur prolly right... or at least, I cannot say I think he is completely honest. For sure he is not trying really hard.

I got a job offer and they are willing to hire me as a "volunteer" until my papers come thru. So that is good.

Now I am first applying for a new passport. Then will try for PIO again. The FRO in Bangalore confirmed that there is no 1 year rule. They also said that in a couple of months they will be able to give PIO cards from Bangalore! That would be great coz at least I can go myself. I agree that going by yourself is often much better. And not as complicated as ppl make u believe.

Oh, I did get a letter from Delhi as well stating that I have to apply for my PIO after my 1 year is over. With the officer's name and phonenumber. Haven't called him, but at least it's a contact for the next time.

Yesssss, Hiep Hiep Hoera

Finally, 17 months after applying, from today i can consider myself PIO officially.
All day looking at and kissing my brand new bribeless PIO visa, still feeling shaky, but i GOT IT.

Thanks everyone who gave me support and comfort.

Never give up and stay positive, it'll come at the end.

If i can help anyone in a simular situation i'll be pleased to do so.

Peace

It's not a visa!

It is an exemption from requiring a visa! For the next 15 years

Congratulations and welcome to the club
