Shashank.. relax

With all honor and respect to all the witty women I admire (and been blatant about my admiration), I am going to risk the below post

"A myth" is an image in terms of which we try to make sense of the world - Quote

and shashank, in this case .. let the myth remain a myth and dont try to make any sense of it... coz usuall "a myth" does not make too much sense....

As far as I understand it everyone has to pay income tax, the crucial question is your employment contract. Most companies that I know of in India pay any LOCAL taxes on your behalf so that your quoted salary is net. You need to check out your employment contract and if they don't pay the tax for you ask for more money.
YOu can tell I'm a lawyer, can't you!

Hi,
Well since my original post here it looks like we may well be moving to Delhi in the New Year.

We're just finalising details but would like to know what you people think of DLF City as this is where we think we may be living. We would be looking at an apartment I think (power back up?) and for an unfurnished 4 bedroom preferably with a servant room. Are there many expats in this area at all?

Also any ideas on nurseries (as in children not plants!) for our youngest child around the area?

Thanks

Blue Topaz

You simply can't find the range of 4X4's that are in Dubai. A popular car in India (also available in Dubai) is the Scorpio. I myself own one in Delhi and am very happy with it. Of course it does not compare with the LandCruisers, Muranos, Porsches etc but is decent by Indian standards. Cars are more expensive in India than here, as is gas. So one does'nt have the luxury of driving as here. And remember in India they drive on the other side of the road. Other 4X4's are Ford Explorer, Honda CRV, Nissan x trail, and even the Landcruiser...

Any other questions..feel free to reach out.

Scorpio is highly recommended... The new one is 9.5 lakhs Rs means around less than 20000$ with all the dealer options.

Blue Topaz, you might want to see the "servant room" before making your "servant" live there. From what i have seen, many of these rooms are uncomfortable at best, and downright appalling at worst. If your servant is used to decent living conditions, she might rightfully stage a revolt!

In terms of housing costs, anywhere in south delhi for a nice, modern 3-4 bedroom will be quite expensive. Just make sure you have a very trusted local person do the bargaining for you. That could reduce your price by half, or more.

And, to reiterate what others have posted, when you make your budget, just figure out if the salary is before or after taxes. Not everything is always explained clearly here, even by trusted employers. YOu don't want to be surprised at the end of the year when you owe someone one-third of your paycheck!! I'm in the same boat at the moment.
