CLLS Syndrome

Anyone else suffering from CLLS?

It's a new syndrome effecting ex-pats that I've just invented ...

'Constant Low Level Stress'

You're enjoying the new experiences - but in the back of your mind there's always the 'what if .......'

What if my daughter gets sick?

What if we had an accident?

What's the number for fire/ambulance/emergency beer delivery service?

Where's the local doctor?

Is that dog rabid?

Is that spider poisonous?

Is this Taxi driver really going in the wrong direction?

Have I just got on the wrong train?

Years of experience in how to cope with anything that life throws at you in your home country are worth little in such a different environment.

I've done quite a bit of solo travel without a care in the world - but living in a different country with your family creates a constant background stress that can take the edge of the rich experience of living in India .

CLLS Syndrome?

I thought that was life?

It was worse in London than it is here.

Lightbulb Stress is Stress

Stress is stress no matter what the name is. This is all part of regular ole fashioned "culture shock," which is normal apsect of living in a different environment and not having the safety nets one has relied on.

Two comments and an observation..

-what makes you think the issues you raise are only related to expats?
-what makes you think/imply that the solutions to some (eg medical attention) cannot be found locally?

Observation: You have to watch all 100 cars coming at you on the highway. But 99 are going to miss you anyway.

One more for the Mod confessions section :

This was originally under "Health." I moved it to "Moving-Not alone" forum as it seemed more fitting to me.

Ahh all the work going on behind your backs, lads/lassies

Familyonthemove, I think CLLS is mostly for expats with kids.
I too have the "symptoms" and because of that I have become quite irrascible since I live here, but I think the situation would be far worse if I also had kids to worry about!

Having lived all over the place I can confidently state that people generally don't travel well. Take them out of their comfortable, familiar environment and watch then squirm. Just an observation not a judgment!!

I can tell you that i just HATE moving house.

We will be under a new roof, just a few kilometres away in the same city, by this time on Monday.

My poor wife is discovering all the nervous, irritable, irascible, nerve-racking bits of me that she hope will die down again when all this is over.

I wish I could just go to sleep until it is all over. But poor Mrs N deals with so much of the stuff that could cause us problems, that the least I can do is stay awake and be irritable!

Capt Mahajan - the only reason I'm unsure if the medical facilites are available locally is because I've not found them yet.

And in Mumbai you could die of old age before an ambualnce reached you .... so self help is essential .... and that may mean driving to the hospital - which could involved getting lost ..... several times. Hence the CLLS.

No judgement on local facilities..... it's just different here to the places I've lived before.

But good point made in the thread about kids. I've looked after myself in 14 countries - but kids increase CLLS to CHLS!

Does it get any better with time and experience? (CLLS that is .... not anything else!)
