I'm a Samsung man; one window unit in the old place (now shifted to Mrs. N's daughter's place) and three (how's that for luxury ) split units here. The window unit we bought from a smaller company, and the three for here from a big shop, which meant having Samsung doing the maintenance direct. Didn't think too much of Samsung's maintenance, so we're shifting that back to the small company as the warranty expires.

No real Samsung problems, but the small company recommend Carrier.

O-General is a posh Japanese make, isn't it? Please post your 'review'!

With three units, we have the capability of having an AC house, but we seldom have more than one switched on. If I ever built from scratch I'd investigate a centralised AC system --- but the ducting for that would be tough (well, ugly rather than difficult) to add to an existing building.

It was not me who bought it..we only use Desert coolers..cannot come around to paying thousands for electricity yet..

The O-General was being installed in the Gym I use, and the owner told me that it cost him 18.3K.

Carrier is a very good company, Samsung and LG, even though are very common, but people who know their stuff do not go for them...

Hitachi one is very popular as well, but its window unit is more expensive than tha split unit of other companies...

Hitachi is very expensive. Had their units in some of our offices in London. Investigated their one-outside-two-inside unit, but it was more expensive than two separate Samsungs!

I think Samsung and LG, as manufacturers generally, are better respected as good value-for-money options in UK than they are here in India.

Yes, but Hitachi is very 'fuel efficient' and maintenance free...it has lot of snob value as well..

O-general is one of the best in the market but generally tend to be more expensive than some of the other brands, not to say that the extra price is not worth it. I have an LG and a Samsung (the 1.6 being the latter) and am very happy with it...no issues, good service.

I have 3 AC's. The first one I bought was LG years back when the cut throat competetion between LG & Samsung did not start. Soon the quality of both the brands started going down due to cost cuttings. When I bought the 2nd. AC Samsung was touted to be better than LG. Last year I bought a Hitachi & I am bowled over.

About the rented AC's most are locally assembled and have very poor efficiency so you will pay much higher electricity bill. If you are living in a top floor apartment you will need a high efficiency machine.

I'm sure we all hope you manage to get up soon, but at least you will be cool as you lie there!

I'd like Hitachi ACs and a Honda Accord.

I have Samsung ACs and a Maruti Swift.

That's life, and I guess I should just be glad that I can afford cars and AC machines at all!

If it makes you feel better Nick, I have a ceiling fan and a bicycle, and by the looks of things that situation isn't gonna change any time soon!

From what's been said, I reckon that buying an AC unit, even for the window, is gonna be out of my budget. I'll be in Delhi for at least another year, although possibly not at the same flat that I'm moving into.

If, as has been said, rented AC eats a lot of power and isn't very effective, then I'll probably just go for the air cooler and grin and bear it once it gets all humid.

Does anyone have experience in buying 2nd hand/re-conditioned AC units or would they be best to avoid?

You could consider buying it on EMI. A lot of banks these days split the cost of consumer durables into 6 month EMI's, and very often with a 0% interest rate . There might be a cost of 250 INR or so but depending on ur rep with the bank that might be waived off as well.

YOU can visit the site www.compareindia.com to check all the available ACs in the market.

Do check the EER(Electricity Efficiency Ratio) of an air conditioner. The higher the EER the more you save on your electricity bills!

Cooler vs AC?

In Hyderabad, which is better? I've heard that it is very dry there, so is a cooler the way to go?

In Hyderabad my people use a cooler. But having used one in Delhi, Agra and Hyderabad I can't recommend such. They are no comparison to AC! Still, you can imagine from the noise that they are actually doing something and feel better from suggestion. Neither works very well when the AC dies in the heat of the afternoon..

A window installed cooler is a better option in Hyderabad vs in Delhi- if you are cost conscious. Else, an A/C is better.

This is because Hyderabad does not have any great humidity, and when it does, the rains are here and it is cooler anyway.

A cooler will never cool the room as much as an A/c does. One advantage of a cooler- if you are in a power cut hit area, you can run it on a much lower capacity inverter.
