Yes, capt, we did just that today. One neighbour in the building said her ayah is looking for more work, so she will bring her up to see us tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!

Shashank - it's the mother in all of us females

And yes, you are quite right with your observations. Much gets lost with the written word, the tone of voice, the smile or absent of it, the emphasis on certain words ... this all can completely change the (perceived) meaning of a sentence.

I thought I heard that my mother-in-law is now paying 1500/month in Delhi. That maid cleans the floors and does dishes. Another maid cleans the bathrooms, and I don't know what she is paid. They have both been working for her for some time and are very reliable (and also get some perks like meals, gifts from us, etc.).

(back in the day the daily dishwasher got 500 per month)

Birds is certainly quite open about her gender in her profile.

Funny, though... I thought she was a man too!

Isn't it odd how we get these conceptions and misconceptions of each other online!

I think Delhi is a bit more expensive than Pune?

I'm always telling a new maid that if she's reliable I will pay more. But so far none has lived up to it, taking a lot of days off. I have never, in all these 11 years I have been living here, had a reliable ayah, i.e. one that comes every day and lets us know if there's a problem so she can't come, and also doesn't take too many days off.

Today the woman from last week came back. She had not shown up for two days and came back as if that's not a problem. Well, this morning another ayah had turned up and had already started cleaning. So, we told the first one, sorry, but we can't just wait around if we don't even know why you're not coming and if you will be back. She was very surprised. She really thought it's perfectly alright not to show up I just don't get it. First asking for more pay and then taking two days off, just beats me.

Anyway, I hope the new woman (I'm scared to write 'the new one' ) stays!

Very funny indeed! I wonder why especially since I am a very girly female; only dresses, etc. I should be really reading Cosmopolitan

But at the end of the day, what does it matter, male, female or whatever. I was once told that that Thais leave it largely open. Apparently they are judged on a daily basis how much female or male they are that day. Quite an interesting concept.

I agree that it brings up all kinds of ideas (which I think is a good thing, anything that gets the brain/imagination going is good) but the concept as such certainly has a place in Indian society if one considers Hijras (or the third sex, tritiya-prakriti in Sanskrit) which often taken part (wanted or unwanted) in religious ceremonies.

Whether they ever take employment as cleaners, I don’t know.
