Yoga

What kind of yoga are you interested in doing?
Are you trying to become a teacher?
You can always try www.aryi.org
It would be my choice. Although, it is really expensive, your looking at about 14000 to 26000 rs a month. (I think)
Good luck!

Hi Choi
It's not working because I wrote it incorrectly. I'm sorry. Try this,
www.ayri.org/
Guruj will be away until the end of May but you should be ok for the summer months. From what I have heard it is his 90th birthday in July and hundreds of students are expected. It might be difficult to find accommodation at that time, as it is not a ashram but only a practice shala.
I would love to practice there, if you go let me know how it goes.

These might also help

Good Luck

PS: Canada is VERY cold!!

I can only give you one link but I know it will be useful.

http://sivananda.org/

The people at Sivananda Yoga Ashram will be of help and I think that you will be in safe hands for your stay in India.

I know that the Ashram at Delhi and Rishikesh have regular classes throughout the year, and you can even choose starter or advanced level courses.

Best of Luck.

If you are in to Ashtanga there are some very good teachers who give classes all year.
You could email gabypascoli@yahoo.co.uk (she's based in Goa) or check out some of the teachers in Bangalore as well as Mysore.
The advantage of going in the 'off' season is that classes are smaller and you get better attention.

Question

Dear AnnieG
Thank you for your information on Yoga, I have just returned from Mysore and Bangalore India and to be honest disappointed is an understatement,
Mysore is the place where students go so that they can brag about training with so and so, where they dont mind paying stupid western prices for one hour of asanas a day,for pranyamas there is a additional fee!!! the first thing i have learnt in three years of yoga is lose the EGO.
The next thing i couldn't fathom was that these guys pay between $200 -$300 US per month for one hour a day of asanas and then haggle the poor guy on the street for a few Rupees, maybe someone out there would like to explain the princples of this!!! as for the likes of Pattabi Jois there is a big Karmic bill to pay back when his time comes.SAD SAD SAD
I have learnt one thing and that is the Indian way of learning is out dated lost in to much mystical Bull
i will be from now on be learning from western instructors who i believe are more sincere in the Yoga approach where they mix the Indian beliefs with here and now scientific knowlegde,I took a workshop with a UK based instructor in Bangkok called Chris Gladwell www.theartofyoga.co.uk if you should ever get the chance try him out a very interesting person.
once again thank you for your email i will follow it thru.

Take care

Yes, I know Chris Gladwell and he is typical of teachers that we have at Purple Valley. They are all highly experienced and well respected. Many are world class.

However I should say that classes at Purple Valley are not cheap. They are Western prices, and that is because we use Western teachers and they have flights etc. If you want 'cheap' then there are several Indian teachers in Goa, but they don't give the kind of classes that we are used to.

Everyone is not like that

There is a thread which discusses "such" aspects of Yoga, though very mildy. Because it is more than a year old, it does not show up in the regular "search" requests. The thread can be found here.

It is really unfortunate about your experience. Maybe you are justified in condemning the Yoga school and Pattabhi Jois.... and how he will be paying for all his SAD SAD SAD karma.....

Just reflect for a minute: "Was there no kaarmic debt in your account?" "As you sow, so shall you reap." Does the law of karma work ONLY to give P.Jois his just desserts and you somehow are beyond the law? Somewhere in the past, [incl. past lives] you could have had an outstanding account balance; which has been taken care of by this experience.

Don't be offended... just trying to put things in perspective.

Again, you are tarring the "Indian way of learning" with the same black colour after a single experience with one school in India. Have you studied at 15 schools to compare or really justify your statement? Do you realize that but for India and its way, you would have NO access to Yoga? Are you really sure that you did enough research on yoga forums on your own or merely relied on the first link given by some helpful person at IndiaMike. [laziness?]

Some time back, i used to point out the merits/demerits of Yoga schools to members of IndiaMike and the Thorn Tree on PM's only. I discovered that invariably they landed up at Sivananda or P. Jois. [in spite of my subtle/not subtle hints about the rip-offs going on] They just go where other Westerners go. To rub salt into the wounds, after finishing the course they waxed eloquent about the excellent facilities they enjoyed and actually recommended the course to other Westerners. This made me realize that i was talking to a herd of sheep who were looking out for Yoga training. So, i stopped making recommendations. Most of them are merely looking out for some bodily exercise [which is not Yoga], is what i put it down to.

Of course, one has some exceptions to the rule. I found a yoga forum which is really good. It is run by Westerners. That forum has extremely serious yoga practitioners, so serious that even in India I did not see that seriousness. That forum is here.

Recently i broke my own silence for some strange reason and recommended some Yoga school to yogagal60510. She found out some other school which may turn out be actually better!! [and I said this on the forum] Is it not her karma which actually leads her to a school which is less commercially oriented?

Don't take this personally. I have nothing against you or anybody else. There are enough people who really enjoy P. Jois's school. Let them. One man's food is another man's poison. You enjoy your training and learn from it. Even some instructors in UK are equally mercenary. Does that mean you will not go to your UK teacher? Of course not!

We all have to go through learning processes. Much of the learning emerges from negative occurences. If we take this positively and put aside the bad taste in the mouth, we are free of that negativity in spite of the negative learning experience. Otherwise we are destined for further negative experiences of the same kind. The pattern remains cyclic till we choose not to react mentally to it.
