Walking clockwise round Temple

Walking clockwise around Temple.

Once a Brahman explained me the reason about walking clockwise around the temple. I forgot most of it. Had to do with energy fields. The exchange of energies between the energy of the center, and the moving energies around it. Who has knowledge about this, and can explain me some more about this?

I felt happy sometimes(depending on time and place) to make some clockwise walks around places which were committed to uplifting symbols, rituals, spiritual practices and so on. It helped me often to feel more in contact with myself: Being there, contemplate, having realisations about my real feelings.

Sometimes it felt more natural to me to walk opposite clockwise. It felt more sensitive, more female (though I'm a man), more right to me. Anyone has experiences on this too?
(ps. I know one should not walk opposite against the clock, because it might be taken as a insult)

I haven't any idea on energy centres - but one version of the reason for a clock-wise 'pradakshina' goes like this. I quote from a small write-up I have on the rationale of Hindu rituals.

"As we do pradakshina, the Lord is always on our right. In India the right side symbolizes auspiciousness. So as we circumambulate the sanctum sanctorum we remind ourselves to lead an auspicious life of righteousness, with the Lord who is the indispensable source of help and strength, as our guide - the "right hand"."

Left and right hands again, like eating...

Right hand clean; left hand unclean.

That's the simplest explanation

i have heard it thus:

'as the planets move round the sun'

i like this explanation though it only holds up in a post-galilean world!

funny, this is a old thread. Last week I got a answer about this, without question it.
In short. If you walk clockwise around a object you add your energy to it. If you walk the other way around you take energy from the object/source.
Sounds plausible to me. I will check the thing out in future. I met some places in India, which were fully loaded with energy, mostly due (I think) to on going puja's, in combination with attracked subtile transent powers.

i've never thought about it but i walk clockwise around temples and anti-clockwise round churches... it just feels right to do it that way.

i think its because in temples the statues/ images of God are in the centre, whilst in churches they are around the side... so I'm always walking with God to my right.

How do you add energy to something?

Om Purna madah purna midam purnat purnam udacyate
Purnaysa purna madaya purna meva vasisyate

Some say that the chakras should rotate clockwise (seen from outside the body - from the front AND the back - for energetically developped ones, even from the sides), in order to produce positive energy (produce energy in general).

Some connect this to the quantum spin of particles. One particle would be a double vortex made of two cones rotating EACH in clockwise OR counterclockwise direction (seen from outside the center point for each opposed vortex).

Some say that "God" rotates clockwise - producing (positive) energy.

Must be some previously unknown definition of the word plausible.

I think most illustrations depict the earth orbiting around the sun counter-clockwise. It also spins conter-clockwise. Of course that's true only if we assume that the North is "up" and we are looking down. Everything is relative

An electron spinning clockwise creates a north pole on the upper side.

It's more interesting to me that most dancers seem to spin clockwise more easily. Is it just because of the training? I wonder if it's true for the left handed dancers. Any IM dancers around?

My random thoughts ...

I've no idea what the given reason is, but here's a speculative non-religious/wider answer. Robert Hertz, a sociologist and anthropoligist who investigated right-hand/left-hand symbolism, got it down to this:

1. Human beings love symmetry. We tend to classify things in twos, as opposites: good/bad, rich/poor, tall/short, even though things aren't that simple. One such dual classification is sacred/profane, and we then add subcategories of sacred and profane things in their twoses:
Sacred: light, sky, high, good
Profane: dark, earth, low, evil

"Left" and "Right" (and clock and counterclockwise) are two entirely subjective ideas, but there they are, set up in "opposition".

2. In most humans, the right hand is the stronger hand. Therefore it becomes associated with power, the left with weakness. By extension, all things located on the right have power ("sitting at the right-hand of God"). Therefore, when assigning roles, the right gets picked to go into the "sacred/light/sky" category, and left in the profane. So people use the right hand, walk towards the right, etc etc.

Short version? Clockwiseness a symbol which is part of a larger collection of symbols which makes sense only inside their own classification system.

Love,

A Proud Left-hander.

I notice the bias toward the right-side too. Google images for "Radhe Krishna", "Shiv Parvati", "Laxmi Narayan", etc. In each pair, from their point of view, the male is on the right, female on left. From what I have noticed as a Hindu, during pujas involving a couple, the female sits on the left of the male.

The term "right hand man" historically relates to the fact that most are right handed. The person sitting to your right (along the table for example)will (if right handed) be able to reach around and stab you in the chest. Thus the most trusted sat on the right of the leader. If you were sat at the left, you were less trusted.

What this has to do with prayer wheels I don't know.

This may or may not have any bearing on those images, but here in the West the male traditionally walked on the right of the woman, as in his role of protector he needed to keep his sword arm free.

These days, he is more likely to walk on the right, so he does not elbow her in the face when he answers his mobile!

(Erm.. Face... That shows how short I am doesn't it? )
