Is Vipassana, Transcendental Meditation, honeyfleur? If it is there is a centre near McLeod Ganj, Himachel Pradesh. And I daresay other centres dotted around the country.

Honeyfleur,

Transcendental Meditation is the name of a organization that teaches some meditation practice. It was started with Maharishi (the bearded guy with the Beatles) in Rishikesh I think. Here is their official website: http://www.tm.org/
Here you can find programs in India too: http://www.maharishi-india.org/programmes/p1tm.html I don't know the Indian website maybe is not up to date but you can email the official website and they will give you information you want. Maybe you already know all about TM but I wanted to add this information because some people think it only means "meditation that leads to transcendental experiences" and they don't know it means a specific organization.

Personally, I think TM is only making money off people. They charge a lot for techniques that are part of all long established meditation programs (one pointedness of mind, breathing meditation). All traditions that have meditation teach these practices but TM does it without much other spiritual teaching so you pay more and get no real wisdom, only a good practice for the health. That might be just what you are looking for. If so, then ignore my opinion. You know what they say about opinions!

I recommend a meditation course at the Root Institute instead. http://www.rootinstitute.com/ They are Buddhist but you don't have to be Buddhist to take their meditation course. I can talk more about that if you want to know but maybe you already know very much and I don't want to force my opinions.

Vipissana is the ten-day meditation with nine days of silence.

We have members who have done it; my wife has done it; I have not, so I'll keep my mouth shut

There is a big (ok les be honest - huge)center near Uttarkashi in Bhankoli. Lots of TM practitioners stay there. All started by Mahesh Yogi.

ah, thanks all for your replies, that's smashing :-)))...i've e mailed the Maharishi centre thing and not heard back yet, i'm being a bit impatient as want to sort trip out...just a point of interest, depsite the huge cost, heard GREAT things about TM...(and it really does cost alot here in the uk, i thought india might be somewhat cheaper!?) i came across it as alot of 'non-dualist' practioners here rave about it, and i'm musical and it involes chanting hey, and i go into a trance just listening to tibetan chanting (!!!) so was thinking it might work better for me than mindfulness which i've practiced on and off for eons...worth a go anyway hey... do talk more please about the root institute lola, would you please? i'm looking for a seriously lovely retreat, have you been? and any other suggestions anyone? thanks all! hfx

hearing great things about something is more probable an indication of good marketing than quality. Again it is personal and I know people with great experiences, but for me (TM was the first practice I did when just a kid) it was nothing special. And there is too much money involved, not only for the meditation itself, but anything else like yjotish or selling of stones in connection with it is usually overpriced.

There have been also some disturbing rumors about Maharishi. There are also indications of "scientific researches" (that they like to point to as a proof of the method) not really being that scientific and impartial. However I don't have enough info to form a firm opinion, but as with anything on the "spiritual market" you shouldn't be too enthusiastic and do some research before getting into something, could save you some time and a lot of money

hmmm I just remembered that there were some restrictions on westerner attending centers in India. Not sure if it was about a particular center (maybe the one near Rishikesr if it still exists) or something more global ... Or if it is a thing of the past...

I've seen a video of this supposed "floating" - they're just bouncing around!

Presumably the main teaching required for this technique is the self control required not to burst out laughing when confronted with this ludicrous sight...

While I do recognise the positive benefits of meditation in general, I'm deeply suspicious of "branded" techniques like TM.
