Baisakhi is New Year's Day in Punjab. It falls on April 13, though once in 36 years it occurs on 14th April. It was on this day that the tenth Sikh Guru founded the Khalsa.

It is celebrated on a large scale. The orthodox Sikhs (Nihangs) perform and show off their horses and fighting skills. Worth going to Anandpur to see these celebrations.

Accomodation can be a bit tight.

Baisakhi was the traditional harvest festival, which now commemorates the creation of the 'Khalsa', or Sikh path as we now know it (uncut hair, turbans, dagger etc.). It is not a new year though. The Sikhs live by the same calendar as the rest of India. It can be a nice time to visit Amritsar, though it will be packed.

Amritsar is the place to watch Diwali. Anandpur is the place to watch Baisakhi. You have all the Nihangs out in force on their horses like a medievel army on the march.

Yes Sikhs may live by the same calendar. It is like the Chinese etc We do so to conform with modern society but we place more emphasis on celebrating Basaikhi than we do celebrating new year on 1 Jan again like the Chinese and the Chinese new year.

Shere - Thanks for clarifying. Anandpur would be intense on Bhaisakhi! Maybe one day...

yes, go to anandpur sahib, as that is the reason why baisakhi is celebrated... the immortal story of guru gobind singh and his 5 pyaras, took place in anandpur sahib... there is a massive mela with lots of animals like horses, camels, cows, rabbits, dogs etc., being traded there as well.. and guys it is the sikh new year, its just us sell outs who have adopted the new calender system of anno domini, as the people in the villages still call april 'baisakh' and may 'jayth' etc... oh yeah the nihangs come in full force, high on opium/ bhang and riding like maniacs across the state going from fair to fair like muktsar in january... they are good for a lark, but don't expect any philosophical or spiritual advice from them... since they remain high all the time, and don't really know much about life anyways (they were guru gobind singhs suicide army)
it would be an awesome experience if one can get there, because unlike pushkar you would find only a small smattering of foreigners, and its also on the way up from chandigarh to manali... anyways punjab is magical, coz it hasn't been deflowerwed by tourism as yet... awesome place to ride your bike on rural roads.....
