The ultimate spiritual aim of any yogi is to get out of the rebirth cycle. That is once you have reached the ultimate salvation, you'll never reborn again. So in that sence the net soul count would come down also!

Geetha explain the rebirth concept in clear and explicit terms than any other scripts. It says body is mortal. It wearout with time, no matter what you do.But the soul can be purified with time.At the end when the body is no more useful the soul 'changes' its home to another body.As simple as that!

The whole advice came from Loard Krishna to the weeping Arjuna in the great bharatha battle field. Arjuna refused to kill the enimies becouse all of them were his relatives. The Geetha ends with a conviced Arjuna in doing his dharma than anything else.

Hey thanks volga! Didn't expect to find gratulations in this place
:-))

I don't know what the saying in russia is, but in belgium "seeing dancing pink elephants" means that you have just too much alchol running in your vains :-)

I will see to it that this won't happen today.
Thamks again and I hope you are a little less confused about the spiritual topics :-)

cheers.

becker, I am taking a break!! (in truth, too tired after work to read or even think)
we have no elephants in russia, so dancing pink elephants are so exotic that it would probably mean you had too much of in your vains

either way, have fun!! (is this more russian?)

but we 'dry reasoners' often think that people turn to religion because they are eager to know the truth, and since they cannot explain everything,
To resurrect this thread(or if we were being hindu here, if we produce a brand of revivalism to the question tomi raised,)

I think people turn to religion because they love elegant theories. (ie big picture theories unencumbered by verification). It is stress relief that there is an overwhelming explenation that (can) cut through all the chaos. Sometimes there ARE such theories proposed even in science, though scientists are understandably suspicious of elegant theories.

why religion

why people turn to religion? easy!

my humble contribution: i think human beings turn to religion because they have:

- fear of unknown (or unexplainable) that they want to get rid of

- need of reassurance that the world is just

in addition to trying to understand the chaos and how it works.

there was an interesting clipping in the Monday's IHT of an article originally printed by The Hindu which said that the Islam was picked by the West as a new foe after the Soviet block got dissolved. they needed an enemy and they picked Islam! i couldn't find the original article by The Hindu on the Web... pity.

As the Dalai Lama said ...
I have no time for asking why we are here.
We are here! Accept it & get on with it

As George Clinton said ...
Free your mind and your ass will follow
the kingdom of heaven is within

As John Lennon said
I'd love to turn you on

And as an ancient proverb says
All roads lead to Rome [not the rome of RC]

Does all that make sense ...Probably not ...but then I'm merely a traveller on a common road trying to find my way and enjoy the spectacle as I do it

my trying to understand "WHY religion" is not "why i am here", but rather WHY a lot of people are there where I am not. They are playing the game which I don't understand, and I am thinking "Where is the catch?"

That depends on their being a catch
Its kind of like catch 22
We want to know when we're alive but in actual fact we'll only know or not know either way when we are not alive ...ie dead
The greates catch 22 of them all Volga

Why do people choose religion...why do people choose a whole number fo things ...I reckon our inate intelligence as opposed to animal instinct has a quizical nature and intuitive questioning quality which like an itch needs to scratched

However I have no answers and certainly have no asnwer to your question...Its a nice one to ponder

Bryan

PS I wasn't meanign to be cheeky by the quote It was more in the nature the DL said it ...serious but light hearted

no worries, i know where he was coming from... Buddha Gautama had a similar attitude to questions that do not directly help us to achieve enlightenment (as in "getting relief from suffering"). i remember someone asked him what was the Beginning of the World and Buddha cut him short.

which I thought was rude

PS I hope I am not being offensive to various religious followers, I am simply mal élevè.

This all depends what kind of religion , the believer will have to do with faith and be sure based on faith , however there are religoins that can be compared to a science , and that is when things really start to get interesting , for some souls that is.

Mula Madhyamaka Karika The end to all philosophical speculation lies not in answers but in the emptiness of all conceptual answers....

True,

but you misunderstand what I said, somewhat.

I only said that answers do not end philosophical speculation, and not that there should be no questions.
