Precious and Semi Precious Stones

I did it! I got my chart read by an astrologer. He told me to get a fire ritural done to appease Saturn (aka Shani) which is weak in my chart and causes no end of trouble. I believe it too! From the research I'd done on my own, I was not surprised.

I'm not planning yet on the fire ritural. I'm thinking more in terms of vanity. Because I like jewelry, and certain stones have healing properties, I'd like to get a ring with a stone that would appease Saturn (aka Shani). One book I consulted said blue sapphire or tanzanite, and one web page said neela mani.

What is neela mani? I can't locate any other info on the web.

I have found some expensive rings on the web also, but don't want to spend very much. My book says people in India don't spend much for their special rings and do just fine by them. What is the market like in India for buying men's sapphire rings? How about tanzanite?

Ok, an update. I just told my partner about this post and he jumped all up and down waving his arms. He says that finding gemstone rings in India is absolute chaos. "Read any of the travel books," he said, "and they'll tell you about all the scams and pressure to buy. It's the worst. Jaipur is especially known for this." I think he has a point in warning me as I am the gullible type who gives in to salesmen whether or not they try a soft sale, hard sale or dazzle, and I just get all excited and start clapping and pulling out my wallet. Does anyone know of a safe path for me to take in jewelry buying while in India?

PS What John has just convinced me is that we don't want dainty rings but rings with non-precious chunky rocks generally worn by men in turbans. Probably lapis lazuli would be the best choice of a blue stone for warding off the evils of Shani.

lapis lazuli is also the color the Medicine Buddha. so the belief is that wearing lapis would be good for your health. I received a Medicine Buddha initiation so my mala is made from seeds from a bodhi tree (the tree under which Buddha became enlightened) combined with lapis beads.

I think you should consult the astrologer as to exactly which stone he means.

If you are going to take this on board, then the energy of one stone is quite different from the energy of another: just being blue is not enough!

You will find that emerald, ruby, saphire etc is a lot cheaper in India: it doesn't have to perfect, clear stones, you should be able to find something beautiful and suiting your belief that you can afford! In this part of the world, the Kashmiri shops sell beautiful necklaces in a wide range of prices.

Some googleing gave me this:

Quote:
Sapphire Turquoise, Neelamani in Sanskrit and , Neelvi Yakut in Persian. The best is one with golden colour, brilliant and symmetrical in shape.
Beware.. A lot of jewelers substitute Topaz/Citrine for Sapphire as they are expensive -- even in India.

Just never buy on the street.

You can never be 100% sure (I've got a "22ct" gold chain bought from a Middle-East airport duty-free shop some years back that is turning a suspiciously coppery colour ) but buying from an established shop is about as safe as you can get.

So, even if you are buying from the lower end of their price range, don't look for cheap, look for a decent shop.

Thumbs up Standard reccomendation

A neelam or neelamaNi is the standard reccomendation by many Indian astrologers for modifying or mitigating the effects of shani [saturn] in the natal horosope.

It is the blue sapphire.

It is least expensive in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hongkong, India [in that order]. Cheats are in all of these countries mentioned... so take care not to get a citrine palmed off [topaz is expensive, not palmable].

It should be a good gem quality stone without major flaws and of at least 4.25 carats in weight for it to have any effect. Double check this with your astrologer if need be.

In India, it is widely given on credit by the family jeweller... expressly for astrological purposes. The person concerned keeps it on the body for a day or two and observes the effect [if any]. If the person concerned makes a good business deal [or something like that] he leeps it. And vice versa.

It is more expensive this way, but at least you get a stone which "suits" you.

I recall telling someone on IndiaMike [in 2003?] to keep it under his/her pillow before sleeping. A dream that very night should indicate whether the stone "suits" the dreamer or not.

hi proxy indian,
I am quiet into astrology myself.I have read in many books that you should wear stones for only those planets which are strong in your chart.Wearing stones for weak planets will worsen the situation.well take care and i advice you to consult some other astrologers too.

Thanks to AvidTrekker and Ishan for the advice. I'm not sure if I really want to invest in precious gems as there's seems to be too much worry about being cheated, and I want to reduce worry. I will be consulting with one or two astrologers so I will take the balance of their advice about what to get.
And if I need a precious gem, I will take Nick-H's advice to find a nice shop.
