Don't know the school in question but I can tell you the one rule that I keep in mind and that has saved me lots of money since arriving in India: a rupee given is never returned.

Don't pay an advance, this is ridiculous and no Indian that I know would do it under those circumstances. Payment on delivery is the gold standard here.

Ask him what that is supposed to be for. Generally speaking, I agree about not paying upfront anywhere, and that includes the U.S. w/ its unscrupulous contractors and tradesmen. But when it comes to a yoga school or that sort of thing if it's a token amount to reserve a slot, I can see that being legit, possibly. Otherwise people from all over the world can say they'll be there for x # of weeks/months, and never show up. So it might just be ok. Again provided we're not talking about a large amount of money...and there's some accounting for exactly how it will be applied.

I agree with the general advice about not paying for anything in advance, but bear in mind that if you were planning on entering India on a student visa, you would have to; one of the documents required to prove you are a genuine student is a receipt for the entire course.

Obviously, if you're just doing a bit of yoga as part of your tourist experience, you could enter India on a tourist visa.
