Never liked Osho. Could never understand how people could give everything to this obvious con-man.

I'm curious as to who is in control of all the money that's coming in these days. Someone's getting rich off of these gullible people.

a thread about osho... started by tagore, from moscow, dug up after a couple of years...no wonder it was interesting in parts. i knew a guy who was a student of osho when he used to teach history/philosophy in some rajasthani university... he told me that osho used to hold the class mesmerized with his lectures.

I know. That's the beauty (one of many) of Indiamike! I think I restarted it. I was looking for info on Osho to send to someone I met recently who seemed convinced that he was the be-all and end-all of meditation. I suggested that she research more reliable sources. She was stuck on the guy. I said "Do you know he was Rajneesh?" She said, "Yes." I said, "He had 99 Rolls Royces!" She said, "Everyone makes mistakes." !!!!

Not to mention all the groupies he could shake his stick at. Not bad for a philosophy professor from Marathwada U..

So having in mind opinions above I would conclude that he, first, mesmerized and then shaked with his stick.
He spread his wisdom to the extent we can measure in inches.

I am not a fan of Osho at all, but I don't judge him for what he did as I do feel that even the most sincere of people can get drunk on power. If enough people treat you like your enlightened then some day you will convince yourself you are What happened to him could happen to anyone. Probably not even he ever thought he'd become as big as he was.

My question is why do so many people like him? Does anyone know? Is it the idea of freely having sex? Is it his open, anything goes, attitude? He is very, very popular. Go to any spirituality bookstores and the Osho section is often huge. Obviously his books still sell, despite the allegations against him. There must be something truthful in them, surely

Some of his books make sense; some of them don't. I do think that he was enlightened and yes, he lost the plot in the end..

True, Most Book-shops have a huge collection of his books ( Probably cos he wrote so many books, I did read somewhere that most of those books were written by his disciples).

Making sense seems not be the issue of whether books sell well or not. Most of the world's religious books make little sense yet the devoted are many. For me, this subject can never make sense. Brings to mind the Einstein quote:' the only things that are infinite are the universe and man's stupidity, and, I'm not so sure about the universe'!

I agree with what you are saying. Making sense is not the main reason why most books sell. Btw, That Einstein quote should be posted in the 'quotes thread', too. Great quote.

A book-shop owner in Mysore told me that osho's books are the best-sellers in his shop, even beating the numerous 'yoga' books (Mysore is the centre of ashtanga yoga). What might be the reason behind it? I don't know.

No clue, Batistuta. Osho had nothing to say except a regurgitation of the world's esoteric teachings from the Vedas to the Zen Masters. He was a philosophy professor who got lucky!
