Osho Meditation Resort

My sister and I are considering going to OSHA Meditation Resort in Pune. Has anyone been? If so, how was it? What is Pune like?

Thanks for any input!

Best,
Sarah

I would advise, IMHO, avoiding Osha all together. It surprises me how few people seem to know who this guy really is. He is Rajneesh. Remember him? The cult leader in Oregon with the 99 Rolls Royces...

Of course, if you like this kind of guy, why not? But, if you are looking for something more genuine, why not try something like Buddhist meditation or some form of Hindu meditational teachings?

It depends on what you are looking for. I would just be very careful around this guy.

Have a great time in any case!

Ha-ha, hardly a day passes when I don't hear people mentioning OSHO... and this controversy entices me more and more to read what was that he was teaching...

but Sarah, Kiki is right that there are more genuine places for self-seeking, for eg Goenka insight meditation centres are all over India (and the world), and lots of non-Osho-related asrams.

Last thing I heard about Osho was that his descendants/followers are debating over the custody of the enormous wealth that he amassed during his lifetime.

...unless you are going to Pune to participate in this wealth-distribution dispute :-))

personally I have read some of Osho's transcripts and found them to be incredibly inciteful and thouroughly refreshing, but I too would advise against going to the "RESORT" it is incredibly overpriced and reports I've heard from it haven't been too favourable, when asked what would become of his teachings after his death Osho replied that it would become like any other religion, It appears it has, wherever theres a vacum after a leader with an original philosphoy dies, his "followers" can seize the opportuinity to twist the teaching into a money making machine ......... just look at St Paul

the ramakrishna ashram looks interesting

Umm, Osho is dead...

but his philosophy and meditations no doubt live on in countless thousands of maroon-clad followers. I found his videos (where he talks e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y) to grate on my nerves, but to each his own. It's a true Western-style meditation resort, and you'll get very good classes, albeit they are very expensive in Rupees. Compare the facilities and pricing to what you'd get anywhere in Europe, North America or Australia and it's a bargain. It's not anything like the rest of India though, and many of the people you'll meet there fly directly to Pune, take their classes, and then fly out of the country.

What I wanna know is, what happened to all the orgies?

I visited this place once, but they wouldn't even allow us to purchase food and drinks at their cafe without providing proof that we were staying there.

And to stay there to had to produce a certificate showing you had been tested for HIV and were not positive.

Mmmm.

The local people don’t go to osho for any spiritual enlightenment or anything. Even today local people view osho as crazy ‘sex driven’ philosophy. Nor the followers are looked at with respect. What it means is that do not walk into your Indian friend’s home and announce to the folks proudly that you are coming from osho’s place!! It has a totally different meaning in local communities.

I know a few of my friends who bought his books thinking that it was some special kind of erotic literature!! Later I’ve seen them literally in tears after reading the books ( when they realized that they've lost the money!)

Local people also go there for a different reason - the garden is very nice to have an evening walk!!

yeah i was just there again, i was there in dec for a few days, i only did a tour of the resort, i didn't feel it so i didn't spend the 1150 for an aids test and go into the resort... i went into the resort this time, i could only handle it a few days... i found it very much institutionilized - not really caring so much about the individual, unfriendly people working, all the people very externalized - attending just looking at each other and checking everyone...

i like osho for his teachings on getting repressed things out (sex, anger, etc.), but the fact he claims enlightenment and his followers believe it is a bit absurd in my opinion - if "one" is enlightened, then one usually doesn't talk about it - there is no "one" left! Also, if one is enlightened, s/he is one with everything, he was very much "us" against "them" - the institutions, society, religions, etc... if he enlightened i don't think he would attack others so much, he woud understand they are just human with faults. anyway, this claim of enlightenment and the belief of his followers brings about this guru worship and believing all he says as gospel (osho said this, osho said that), and i think makes one unthink for him or herself.

finally, i did not like the meditations... he talks about programming from society, parents, religions, institutions, so one exchanges that programmnig for osho programming. although i could see it's use, but I have already done lots of yoga and pranayama (breathing techniques), the strong breathing and yelling hurt my throat, to me it is important for things to come out naturally... so i left pune for hampi and am chillin out in nature! much more healing for me.

i do like dancing so that was sort of fun, although it was kind of like club music, i prefer melodic trance so i didn't get into it too much.

finally, pune is a city and very polluted, lots of rickshaws, for me it was hard to know of places and find a good palce to eat, i just seem to get stuck by the ashram and the german bakery.

OK hope this message helps some people.

i hope you all find what you are seeking.

prem and shanti,

dan

Pune was and still is despite incredible growyh a good city as cities go. Osho was a scam wven when the Rajneesh was around and its more expensive now. Still, if you are in the market for convenience store salvation and spiritual solace its not bad. Great quality of publications...

Clueless about Osho

No one replying to this thread has actually spent any time in the ashram at Poona. I went for three weeks a few years ago as part of a big trip around lots of ashrams around India. I thought it an amazing place, not 'the' place though. There is lots you can get out of it, but not the real India, admittedly. Also the important thing about Osho is not to take it seriously, this seems to be his central teaching as far as I can make out, hence the 90 Rolls Royces

Enjoy.
