Mahavatar Babaji - - A reality or myth

Legend has it that somewhere close to Badrinath there exist The Mahavatar Babaji—the eternal deathless master

The world first heard about Babaji courtesy Paramahansa Yogananda's book “Autobiography of a Yogi” {most read autobiography in the world} and Sri Yukteswar Giri’s book “The Holy Science”.

Babaji has certainly become a big name in the spiritual super market.

I have come across so many swamis / gurus who claim to be direct disciple of Babaji {including some big names in Badarinath}

This is certainly a free for all for everyone

I have also come across various people who have dedicated their entire lives in search of this great soul

Ravalji {head priest} of the badrinath temple has a very old drawing of the idol of the Badrinath temple. It has a striking resemblance to the sketch of babaji in “Autobiography of a Yogi”

I don't know if he exists but I'm rather sure that it is often misused - if you want to make up some kind of spiritual authority coming from the lineage it very easy to say that you have seen Babaji somewhere on the Himalayas and that he initiated you - impossible to check. So I'm skeptical about all this claims.

He exists. The book "Autobiography of a Yogi" say "If you bow in reverence to Babaji, you can feel his blessings".

If someone really wants to meet him, pray pray and pray to him. He would show you a path(may not be an easy one) by which would lead you to him.

I have the book autobiography of a yogi, and the real details about babaji are given in the book Living with the Himalayan Masters by Swami Rama, the things mentioned in the book himalayan masters are more accurate.

And even I researched a lot about babaji, now comming to your point of reality or myth, it applies to all hindu gods , right from Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, because no one has seen them in person.

And as far as Kriya Yoga is concerned it is a secret practice given only to the followers and taught in the ashram. Actually during my research I came across the forbided kriya yoga, book, but without a master to teach you just cant read the book and
learn kriya yoga.

Doing a google search on Mahavatar Babaji will give you lots of information with pictures

i have read the book living with the himalayan masters but did not find a direct reference to babaji

Also the entire practice of kriya yoga is different from guru to guru so much difference

If you have heard if Gayatriparivar http://www.awgp.org/ which was founded by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya, his Guru was Mahaavtar babaji.

His book in hindi "Sunsaan ka Sahachar" mentions about his journey to Tapovan in Himalayas and his meeting with the ever living master who guides all spiritual activities of the world from time to time. He however doesnt use the term Maha avatar babaji. This name was coined by Yoganand Paramahansa.

the truthfulness of that book is disputable, there are some indications a lot of it is mad up..
I agree about the need of a guru, but I've seen different variants of kriyas from different sources and lineages, so I'm not sure about the secrecy, nor that it was lost before Lahiri Mahasaya.. For example Paramahans Maheshwarananda, who is probably the most popular yoga teacher here, teaches kriyas to advanced disciples (personally, unlike some other methods done systematically by his yoga instructors), and he is not from that lineage but a disciple of Swami Madhavananda, in his turn a disciple of "Mahaprabuyi" of Rajastan. He has also studied yoga for a while in the Shivananda ashram (Divine Life), Rishikesh.

I'd also suspect that finding the techniques on the net should not be impossible?

how do you know that for sure? I mean no disrespect, but there are so many bogus "gurus" in India that taking what someone says for granted seems a little naive to me..

I know what you mean. I have been in the same search for several years.
During the search of a Guru, I spent almost a year with Gayatri Parivar around 10 years back. So, I can say he was a true Guru. But after he left the physical body almost 50 years back, his mission seemed to have lost the real focus and so I couldnt remained tied to it for long.

Thats the big problem with most of the Spiritual Organisations. Once the original founder leaves the body, it goes into not so competent hands and doesnt remain effective anymore. Even the real teaching gets flawed after the departure of the founder.

take the example of kriya yoga, first of all the book autobiography of a yogi is under dispute , anand sangh claims that the book published by SRF {orange cover} is not the original and a lot of changes have been made / anand sangh have published their own original version {blue book}

also the very practice of kriya yoga is so different, people claim that it had been modified to suit western standards

I agree with you, it was published in 1975 it has also tried to cover a lot of things from autobiography of a yogi which was published much before 1946
