I know that this was posted nearly three months back and the info might come too late to be of help to the OP.However this query reminded me of a few articles in the local paper about the setting up of Indian Music Therapy Research and Development Foundation in Kochi, Kerala.I managed to find the links to some of those reports :-

One of the most updated music therapist is certainly doctor Arun Apte. i attended some workshops with him in Nagpur area and still practice now at home. music therapy is the best, it s very subtle and requires the students to start learning about themselves. really cool. enjoy it!

Well, have you looked at the KYM in Chennai? They do have courses of kirtans.
