| Senior Member | Little known festivals of India... We are so full of it.. between Kashmir and Kanyakumari, I am sure we will have festivals on each day of the year. I am posting this thread to collect information on the little known festivals of India, thier origin and details. So, what inspired me to post this today. During a discussion in office today, we talked about how some festivals are vanishing with generations. How we may never be able to let our kids know more about these festivals (noble thought... eh?)So, here is my contribution to it. Today's festival: Vara Mahalakshmi Vrata- Friday, August 24 2008 (this festival is not based on the English calendar. So the date is not the same each year) Details: Mahalakshmi Vrata is a sacred day in Hinduism. More commonly known as "Varalaksmi Vratha" is performed by Married Hindu ladies on the Friday just before the full moon day in the month of "Sravana" - July/August- according to Hindu calendar. This is an important "Vratha", meaning a vowed religious observance in Sanskrit. "Varamahalakshmi Vratha" is performed more commonly in Southern Indian States of Andhra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and also in parts of Maharashtra and Orissa. Extract from wiki. more details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahalakshmi_Vrata Tourist Importance : None, no specific events or activities. Mods: Did not find a similar thread, if there is one please feel free to merge it.

| Not sure if you can call it a Festival In 1972 I was working for Oil and Natural Gas Commission in Andhra Pradesh. I was a Geophysicist then. My job was prospecting for oil in Godavari basin. We went from Warangal to a small town called Kataram. From there we went by jeeps to some place deep inside of forest area. We set our camp near a small village. We used to buy fresh and sometimes fermented Toddy from the village. But that is another story. Came to know from the village that there is a festival near a temple in one of the villages. Went to the festival site by jeep with a few of my colleagues and my Japanese wife (We are still married, Thank you!). There were thousands of people in a location but a whole lot of them were women. At one place we saw many women sitting in a group , holding coconuts in their hands and crying loudly. Found out that the nearby temple was famous for granting fertility to women. Coconuts were held by the women just like a woman holds a baby in her arms. The whole atmosphere was surreal to say the least. Memory is not so vivid now but that scene of women holding coconuts and crying is forever burned into our memories. May be someone from Andhra Pradesh can verify and name the festival. |
